

The family moved to San Antonio in 1927. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and the University of Texas Austin, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, and received his law degree from the University of Texas Law School. He was an ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served his country, particularly in the South Pacific.
He married Josephine Houston on September 29, 1942, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where they remained life members. He practiced law with his brother-in-law Reagan Houston III for over 30 years and served on the boards of the Witte Museum and the McNay Art Museum. He was passionate about the state of Texas and its history.
His grandfather Andrew Jackson Zilker, for whom he was named, gave to the City of Austin the land surrounding Barton Springs, extending to the Colorado River, which now comprises Zilker Park. Mr. Thompson had been a long-time member of the San Antonio German Club, the Order of the Alamo, the San Antonio Country Club and The Argyle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine; his parents; his brother, Robert T.P. Thompson, Jr., and his son-in-law, William L. Coiner.
He is survived by his four daughters, Ann T. Coiner, Sally T. Gorham, Lucy T. Hall, and Josephine T. Shaw and husband, Ted; grandchildren, Andrew Thompson Gorham, Amy G. Case and husband, Chad, Emily C. Foster and husband, Trey, Josephine C. Dorris and husband, Taylor, William E. Hall II, Gray H. Hall, Jessica S. Ivy and husband, Jack, McLean H. Shaw; and seven great-grandchildren.
