Anita Ann Elkins, a cherished matriarch and beacon of grace and courage, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on October 12, 2024. She was born on January 29, 1939, to Egisto and Viola Del Greco in Columbus Ohio. In this Capitol city, she grew up alongside her sister, Rita Kreuzer, and brother, Dido Del Greco and an extended family of relatives, where an interest in dance, studies and a career as a buyer was expressed. As she ventured into adulthood, her path led to a distinguished career in civil service. For over three decades, Anita proudly served her country in Washington DC, Kentucky, and Texas, as well as overseas in Japan and Okinawa. This illustrious profession, marked by numerous personnel awards, not only showcased dedication to her nation, but also allowed her to immerse in diverse Asian traditions, cultures and countries.
Anita's legacy of service extended beyond her professional life and into her community engagements. She was a respected member of Beta Sigma Phi and the Texas Red Hats, cultivating deep and lasting friendships within a global sisterhood. Anita's passion for community also shone brightly through her involvement in youth soccer programs. Her visionary spirit was instrumental in founding the Lexington Youth Soccer Association (LYSA) and an elite traveling soccer team, both of which continue to foster young talent and sportsmanship to this day.
A woman of many interests, Anita appreciated the arts by attending the San Antonio Symphony, cheering on the SPURS at their home games, and engaging in games of Bridge, Bunco, and Mahjong, which she masterfully played with a close-knit group of friends. Anita’s culinary skills were legendary among loved ones, as were her gardening abilities, which brought beauty to the home and fresh ingredients to her kitchen. Her home-cooked Italian meals set the bar as the gold standard, unmatched in flavor and love and her Lazarus cheesecake was the best ever! Above all, Anita loved shopping for and attending the activities of her grandchildren, who always brightened her eyes and soul.
Anita was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Clarence, and is survived by children, Brent and his wife Vickie, Kevin and his partner Ernesto, Jeff and his wife Samantha, Martin and his wife Diana, Shannon, Diane and her husband Don, and Brenda and her husband Dana. Anita’s legacy continues through her grandchildren Austin, Brittany, Branden, Marlo, Alexis, Chase, Britton and Ariyah and great-grandchildren, Shay, Ari, Jameson, Amara and Ava. Also mourning are numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, her beloved caregivers, neighbors, friends and her faithful dog, Patches, who was her constant companion until the end.
Anita's passing is a profound loss for her family and friends. Her valiant battle with Parkinson’s for over 7 years was a testament to her strength, resilience and courageous spirit that will continue to resonate within the community and beyond.
Her story is not one of an ending but a continuing legacy through the lives she touched and the memories she created that will be treasured forever. She will be deeply missed but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. With love and adoration, The Elkins Family.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Anita’s honor to the Michael J Fox Foundation, a charity she championed for research and a cure, is greatly appreciated. Contact: Kevin Elkins 210-854-1114
