Anne Thorn Lopez passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025 at the age of 89 in San Antonio, Texas. Born in 1935, in St. Augustine, Florida. She lived a life marked by creativity, kindness, and a deep connection to nature.
Anne cultivated a successful career as a talented artist, touching the lives of many with her beautiful paintings always signed “Thorn”. She worked downtown in the artistic community at La Villita for over thirty years. NIOSA was her favorite fiesta event.
She was a master gardener. Her backyard was full of plants, vegetables, and vibrantly colored flowers. Anne spent many happy hours outside with her dog Ocean, lovingly tending to her garden and watching the comings and goings of creatures like birds, squirrels, racoons, and skunks passing by her koi pond.
An animal lover at heart, Anne’s compassion extended to all living creatures. Her kindness knew no bounds. She truly loved her little dogs Miss Mopsy and Mr. Mop Mop. She always made a point to donate to local animal shelters. Anne was especially fond of cats. Glancing around her house you would see various kitties displayed on stained glass, pottery, refrigerator magnets, cups, quilts and more.
Anne was also an early “foodie”, delighting in the exploration of cuisines and flavors from San Antone, to New Orleans, all the way down to Mexico. She traveled many places for culinary adventures way before it was a widespread cultural phenomenon. She once owned a restaurant up north called “Anne’s Place”. Hot turkey sandwiches, smothered in brown gravy that her Dad Carl made fresh every morning, were the most popular and delicious menu item.
She was also an avid reader with a voracious appetite for books. She especially loved historical, mystery, and romance novels as well as cookbooks. She was a self proclaimed football and basketball fanatic, cheering the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys on to victory from her armchair.
She was beautifully cared for by the loving staff at The Cottages of Danny Kaye the last two years of her life.
Anne was preceded in death by her father Carl Stander, her beloved son Stephen Lopez, and great granddaughter Victoria. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Robert Lopez, daughter Cathleen Berkey, grandchildren Britt Calentine and Andrew (Shelly) Berkey, great grandchildren Miranda, Alexander, Madison, Brock, and Faith, nieces Jacqueline and Nychole, as well as countless loving members of the Lopez family and scores of lifelong friends.
Please join her celebration of life at the McCullough location of Porter Loring Mortuary on Friday February 21st. The public viewing will be at 10 a.m. with services set to start promptly at 11 a.m. A brief graveside service will be held immediately following at San Fernando Cemetery III on Cupples Road.
