Art was the devoted husband of Mary Alice Wertz, née Yowell, and a loving stepfather to her three children.
He graduated from Johnstown PA High School in 1948. Though he received no degrees in higher education, his drive for self-education never ended. At various stages of his life, he was among the vanguard of those learning new technologies, from television to satellite radio to secure encryption to computers.
Art served proudly in the United States Marines from 1952 to 1960. Even after he quit smoking, he retained his Zippo lighter, which played the Marine Corps Hymn.
He then moved into Civil Service, working for Security Service and later the National Security Agency. Art was a passionate Cold Warrior, and did his part to help defeat Soviet Communism.
After his retirement, he returned to his early enthusiasm for radio, as Ham Radio operator N5AEN and Army MARS AAR6SX.
Art leaves Mary Wertz, his wife of 44 years; sister, Sally Kardes and husband, John; children, Margaret, Scott and Mark Harden and wife, Veronica; grandchildren, Bryan, Lesley, Curt, Madeleine, Gabrielle Harden; nieces, Kim and Kristen Kardes and Karen Raabe and husband, Barrett. Art was a humble, kind and generous man. Family and many friends whose lives were touched by him will miss him deeply. May he rest in peace in the loving embrace of God.
