The daughter of Robert Earl and Lena Maude (Needham) McDonald, Libby was born in Lockesburg, Arkansas January 3, 1924. Raised in southeastern Oklahoma, she attended Murray State College in Tishomingo before entering the Wesley School of Nursing in Oklahoma City. WWII intervened, and she left school early to marry her high school sweetheart Carl Clark Holland, only to be widowed when his B-17 perished over Germany months later.
At her father’s urging Libby accepted an Army civil service position, subsequently moving to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, a life changing decision. There, she met and married her loving husband of 55 years, Kenneth Earl Trammel. Libby and Ken would have three children, and three grandchildren. She would devote the rest of her life to raising and nurturing her much loved family.
After the children completed college and were on their own, Libby and Ken would purchase a small plot of land near Seguin, Texas that Ken turned into a garden retreat. They spent many hours enjoying the “farm” away from home with family and friends until Ken’s death in 2002.
Libby would develop other interests in retirement. Aside from spoiling her grandchildren, she was most proud of her many years as an Institute of Texan Cultures docent, leading tours and participating in practical spinning and quilting demonstrations for visitors. She became computer literate early on, and was a voracious reader to the very end. Libby also cherished her independence as a Towers at Park Lane resident.
Libby is preceded in death by husbands Carl and Ken, parents Earl and Lena, sister Edna Earl Hill and granddaughter Elizabeth Thom. She is survived by her children Kenneth Trammel, Jr. (Christy), Gary Trammel (Beverly) and Vicki Thom (David), granddaughters Claire Trammel and Alexandra Thom, niece Sherron (Hill) Jordan and their extended families.
At Libby’s request, she will be interred with a simple graveside ceremony. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 19th at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Vernon Welshans officiating. Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com.
