

Barbara Esgen Stieren died peacefully at home on April 25, 2011. She was born in Abilene, Texas on May 14th, 1932. Barbara was the daughter of Dorothy Jeanette Rogers and Wienand Kelly Esgen, and later the stepdaughter of Frances McGee Esgen. She attended high school in both London and Cairo. Barbara graduated from the University of Texas in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, where she later became a golden arrow recipient. Barbara was also a Sigma Chi sweetheart. She was an active member of the Church of Reconciliation where she chaired the Altar Guild for many happy years. Barbara participated in countless organizations including the Opera Guild of San Antonio, the San Antonio Botanical Garden, the Junior League of San Antonio, and The Battle of Flowers Association. She was a member of the San Antonio Country Club and the Argyle Club. Barbara's favorite pastimes included beachcombing with her sister on Kiawah Island, bird watching on her back porch, and spending time just about anywhere with her family. Barbara took great pride in raising her children and providing them with a happy home, whether on the ranch in Gillett or at the house in San Antonio. She was a model of courage and grace, stemming from her deep faith in God, and was a pillar of strength for her entire family. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Connie Esgen Hydrick and Wallace E. McGee, and her granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Wirth. She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Lisa Stieren Cox and Wally, George Louis Stieren and Teri, Wendy Stieren Wirth and Tom, Kelly Stieren Daniell and Jim, Amy Stieren Smiley and Chase. Barbara has sixteen grand children: Heather Stieren Hardeman, Gretchen Jean Stieren, Arthur Jefferson Stieren, Michael Dylan Cannon, Corina Jo Adams, Gillian Laine Stieren, Thomas Anthony Wirth, Laura Wirth Cone, Emily Bryson Perryman, Chase Stieren Wirth, James Richard Wilson Daniell, Jr., Kelly Corinne Daniell, Amy Elizabeth Daniell, Michael Gage Burgess, Samuel Chase Smiley, II, and George Louis Smiley. She has two great-grand children, Thomas Anthony Wirth III and Landry Lynn Wirth, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the following people for their loving and constant care: Marcella Jimenez, Tammy Zion, Debbie Connor, Debbie Rue, Adrian Frank and Dr. Scott Campbell.
