Barbara Jean Tilley Wheeler of San Antonio, TX died peacefully at home on August 11, 2012 at the age of 88. She was the daughter of the late Maude Lockwood Hallenbeck Tilley and Arnold Barker Tilley of Port Chester, NY.
A longtime resident of Riverside, CT, she moved to Madison, CT previous to San Antonio. An accomplished pianist and a painter in oils, Barbara had a great appreciation for art, music and travel. Her most important role was raising her family and she accomplished that with endless wit and grace. She was an active participant in the Old Greenwich Art Society and The Wednesday Painters, and volunteered for many years at Community Answers in Greenwich, CT.
Besides her loving husband of 68 years, Robert T. Wheeler, Barbara leaves behind her sister, Dorys Waeber of Vero Beach, FL; four daughters, Donna Wheeler of Boston, MA, Laurie Wall of Newington, CT, Janine Wheeler of San Antonio, TX and Pamela Braun (Thomas deceased) of Madison, CT. She will also be greatly missed by her five grandchildren, Jessica Claflin (Brendan) of Boulder, CO, Stephanie Fortin (Jonathan) and great grandson, Tucker of Scituate, MA, Pamela Wall of Boston, MA, Dirk Braun of Aspen, CO, and William Braun of Madison, CT.
The family is especially grateful to Barbara's private caregiver, Richard Marin for his devotion to her well-being and happiness. Our thanks also go to the members of Hospice Compassus for their kindness and care.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Perrot Memorial Library, 90 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT 06870.
