She was a 1955 graduate of Big Spring High School, and earned an Associate’s Degree from Howard County Junior College. Belva met the love of her life, Stanley Hess, while he was stationed in Big Spring at Webb AFB for flight training. Life as an Air Force wife allowed her to travel the country and world. Belva and Stan lived in Selma, Alabama; Chandler, Arizona; San Antonio; Laredo; Del Rio; Glendale, Arizona; Woodbridge, England; San Antonio; Big Spring; Wichita Falls and back to San Antonio in 1973, where the family moved for final time and remains in the same house to this day.
Belva and Stan loved traveling around the country to visit family and friends, which allowed them to see many beautiful areas of the United States. They and their family attended many Texas Longhorn and Texas Tech football games, including the 2005 Rose Bowl National Championship. She and Stan were there at Super VI when the Dallas Cowboys won their first Super Bowl. They supported the San Antonio Spurs from the team’s beginning in 1973 and were season ticket holders for over 40 years, seeing them win five championships. Belva loved her family and enjoyed gathering together with them. The household was a place where their kids’ friends could find a safe, fun place to swim and hang out. She was very proud of being part of the Air Force family, and proud of her and Stan’s duty to their country.
As a fourth-generation Texan, Belva was proud of Texas and very proud of being a Texan. She always gave her love, strength, energy and devotion to family, home and faith throughout her life, and her legacy will always be with us.
Belva is survived by her husband Stanley; their son Wesley of Houston; daughter Nancy Carter and husband Preston of Dripping Springs; grandson Lt. Albert Carter and wife Melissa of Florida; granddaughter Cathy Carter of Dripping Springs; two great-grandchildren, McKenna Carter and Garrett Carter; sister Lana Overton of Carthage and countless extended family and friends.
