Bernard S. Bernie Rose passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, December 7, 2007. Born to Philip and Rose Rose in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 11, 1926, Bernie was the youngest of three brothers.
Bernie served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He then attended the University of Texas where he met the love of his life, Maxine. After briefly living in Dallas, they moved to San Antonio where Bernie began his successful 44 year career at Block Distributing.
An avid sports fan and participant, Bernie was a softball stud, winning All-State honors as a second baseman. An all-around athlete, he played tennis and golf religiously. He enjoyed many years of square dancing with Maxine. Clogging soon followed and his clogging group was invited to perform on the Jerry Lewis Telethon.
Bernie was always passionately involved in community service. He was a member of the NEISD School Board. In later years, he became an elementary school student mentor. He was a member of the San Antonio Red Carpet Committee and an Ambassador Greeter at the San Antonio International Airport where he welcomed servicemen, VIP's and visitors to the city he loved. Every acquaintance became Bernie's friend.
He volunteered with the San Antonio Sports Foundation, Meals on Wheels, and various other organizations in the area.
Bernie's greatest joy was being a docent at the San Antonio Zoo. His devotion to the animals and the children was an inspiring influence to all those he touched. This dedication to the Zoo and the community was duly recognized when Bernie received a Profiles in Leadership Award presented by Mission City Business and Professional Women in 2005.
Bernie is survived by Maxine, his beloved wife of 57 years, his children, Paul and Gayle Rose, Barry and Donna Rose, his grandchildren, Bethany and Michael Rose and his brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Chickie Rose and beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Robert Schnitzler, Dr. Rusty Felter and the nurses of the Cardiac Care Unit at Methodist for their kindness and care toward Bernie.
