She was raised in McAllen, Texas, in the Rio Grande valley, by her father, Mr. Britton, who, in addition to owning Britton's Jewelry store and the Kodak processing center, also owned KRIO radio. Betsy attended and graduated from Sherryland High School where she was voted most popular cheerleader. To know Betsy one would quickly discover that she was a natural born entertainer at heart and was always ready with a funny line or action that would have people laughing even during somber moments. It was destined that she would wind up in radio and she was very good at what she did. Her on-air personality drew many fans at each station that Betsy worked at. In November, 2015, Betsy was honored to be inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
But despite her passion for radio and entertaining, Betsy would often say that her biggest accomplishment and her contribution to making this a better world was giving birth to her only child, the love and joy of her life, her beautiful daughter, Saundra. In Betsy's final years Saundra would not only be her helpful companion but her best friend. This mother and daughter relationship was a blessing for both of them.
Betsy is survived by her daughter, Saundra Marie Reyna, and three granddaughters, Amanda 22, Alissa 15 and Aliana 8, as well as her two brothers, Alton and Alvie Britton, and her loving companion of many years, Tom Mayer, all who will miss her dearly.
On Friday, January 8, 2016, Betsy will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
