Betty Jane Rogers Stevens, age 92, passed away on February 15, 2016. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Betty was born on February 5, 1924 in E. St. Louis, Illinois. She was one of two daughters born to Bobby Elizabeth and James P. Rogers. Betty excelled in school, graduating in 1942 from E. St. Louis High School as a member of the National Honor Society. She briefly attended Peabody Secretarial College but was lured away to work as a secretary during WWII. She met her future husband, Thad in high school. They married in 1945 after Thad was discharged from the Navy, where he served on a destroyer from Pearl Harbor to the end of the war. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky after the war where they found employment. When their two children were old enough to stay alone, Betty embarked on a full time career as the executive secretary of the President of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kentucky. She was proficient in short hand and possessed other professional skills that allowed her to succeed in her position. She retired in 1985 after 20 years of service. Betty and Thad moved to San Antonio in 1990 where they made their new home. They were active members of University United Methodist Church and met many friends. Betty enjoyed taking "road trips" and visited many areas across the U.S. and Canada. Betty is preceded in death by her sister, Gloria De La Paz, and her loving husband of 62 years, Thad S. Stevens. She is survived by her daughters, Sara Rodriguez and her husband, Jose, of San Antonio; her son, Kenneth Stevens of Paradise Valley, Arizona; her grandchildren, Adam, James, Anne, Alice, Richard, Paul and Martin; two great-grandchildren, Zsofia and Evan. She enjoyed their visits tremendously and loved them unconditionally. We will miss the twinkle in her eye, her sense of humor, and those engaging political discussions. Her generosity will always be remembered. Many thanks to the Chandler staff for their devotion and care and to her special friend, Nancy.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2016 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough Ave.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
