Betty "Joyce" Thompson, age 76, passed away on December 8, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. Joyce was born to parents, Robert Lee Edwards and Betty Jane Williams on July 24, 1945, in Akron, Ohio. She was the second of four children. Growing up, her family was actively involved in church, she played many musical instruments, sang in the school choir and was a Girl Scout from Brownies to Cadet.
Following high school graduation in Bradenton, FL, she received an Associates Degree in business. Joyce served as a military spouse for 20 years in the US Air Force. They were stationed at Brindisi, Italy, Baltimore, MD, San Antonio, TX and Bedford, MA. As an adult, she led the Bedford Girl Scout Cadets Bell Band and many local scout troops for her children. She loved the Lord and was a regular member at several large churches in the community throughout the years. Her relationship with Jesus grew deeper the past 5 years at Cornerstone Church. Over the years, she enjoyed singing in the church choir and volunteering in the community. She was a proud Aggie Mom, a Patriot, grateful to be an American. Her love for all animals, especially horses was known by all as she supported 4-H and AQHA and took in every stray animal that showed up on her doorstep. She worked with her husband, Dr. Robert "Stan" Thompson, at Eyes of San Antonio as an optician and office manager. As a couple, they were dedicated to serving their patients and called it their marketplace ministry.
She married Stan later in life and as they blended their families, she always sought to unify them as one. Her personality was bigger than life, loved by many and she never knew a stranger. She would help those less fortunate and often take in those needing love and care into her home for family functions. She extended her heart and life to others and pulled people in as family.
Joyce loved her family and is survived by Daughter Deborah Coates; Son Robert Carraway; Son Kenneth Thompson; Daughter Kathy Workman; Son Christopher Thompson; Brother Bill Edwards; Sisters Carla Edwards and Becky Surgenor and affectionately known as "Mimi" by her 13 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends January 4, from 3-7 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
