Oscar “Bob” Carbajal passed away February 14, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. Bob was born September 28, 1940 in El Paso, Texas to Jose and Beatrice (Gonzalez) Carbajal. He graduated from El Paso High School in 1957. Bob developed a love for music early in life, and in 1960, he began a career in the music industry at radio station KOSA in Odessa, working as a DJ named Bob Robin. A few months later, he and a couple of fellow musicians headed to Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune. They met a young unknown singer named Glen Campbell on the way, and he tagged along and joined their band briefly before moving onto bigger and better things. Bob figured out fairly quickly that life as a drummer wasn’t going to pay the bills, so he moved back to Odessa and resumed working as a radio DJ. That same year, he met a young lady from Odessa named Gayla Jean Gibson. They married in Odessa on April 17, 1964, and had two children, Eddie and Amy. After several years as a DJ for different Odessa/Midland radio stations, including KOSA and KECK, Bob changed to a career in law enforcement, working first for the Odessa Police Department and then the Ector County Sheriff’s Office. In 1978 his career transitioned again and he became an insurance adjustor.
In 1996, Bob and Gayla started a new chapter in their lives when they moved to San Antonio. Bob continued to work as an insurance adjustor until he retired, but his love of music never left. He enjoyed playing in local country and western bands, and he was also in the Crossroads Baptist Church band, where he and Gayla were members for many years. They also became Poppie and GiGi to their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob and Gayla were married for 57 years, until she passed away from Covid in 2021.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Beatrice Carbajal; his brother, Joe Carbajal, and his beloved wife, Gayla. He is survived by his son, Eddie Carbajal; daughter, Amy Carbajal Morrow (Kelly); grandchildren Katie Morrow (Xavier Brown) and Brendan Morrow (Kyna); great grandchildren Braxton, Bridget and Maeve; brother-in-law Benny Gibson (Barbara); numerous nieces and nephews and his granddog, Wallace Elliot Morrow.
