Bruce Huntington Warren transitioned from this life three weeks after celebrating his 97th birthday surrounded by his loving family. He was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, but for over 60 years made San Antonio, Texas, his home.
As a teenager, to help support his family, he worked as a coal passer and assistant fireman on merchant ships in the Great Lakes, then in World War II joined the Marine Corps and served as a PFC in China. That experience sparked a lifelong interest in other cultures. An attentive listener, he loved meeting new people and learning about their own families and backgrounds.
He met his beloved wife, Alma Jane Berry, on a Methodist Youth Fellowship sleigh ride when they were in high school and they shared 60 years of wonderful life together before her death in 2005.He earned a PhD in parasitology at the University of Minnesota Duluth, then went on to Medical School and joined the Air Force. He spent exciting years as a flight surgeon and research scientist in the early days of the Space Program and worked with several of the first astronauts. During a three-year tour in Brussels, Belgium, he worked with aerospace scientists in over 20 countries, and took his family on camping trips throughout Europe to experience museums and historical sites. His passion for science was matched by his appreciation of music, art, and travel.
He was awarded a Purple Heart for service in Vietnam.
His medical career spanned several disciplines, beginning as a surgeon and ultimately becoming a psychiatrist who devoted much of his work to helping veterans with PTSD. His compassion was boundless, and children and grandchildren alike will always remember his wise counsel, unconditional love, and unwavering support, as well as his magnificent reading from A Christmas Carol every Christmas Eve. His many friends, likewise, will remember his generous spirit, readiness to laugh, and willingness to offer a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Jane, and son William Warren. He is survived by son Richard Warren, daughter Mobi Warren, son James L. Warren (Margaret), daughter Leslie Barton (Larry), daughter-in-law Wendy Warren; grandchildren Emily Han (Gregory), Bruce Ho (Dana Graef), James Phillips, Drew Barton, Michael Barton (Brooke), Sarah Jane Barton Hinson (Elliott), Megan Krill (Jeff), Bronwen Warren, Charles Warren; great-grandchildren Rhiannon Krill, Lee Krill, Maryn Barton.
His family extends gratitude to the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans' Hospital staff who provided comforting end-of-life care. As a World War II Marine, he was moved by the visits of staff who had also served in the Marines and expressed how inspired they were by him.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Porter Loring North on Thursday, May 23, 2024. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Disabled American Veterans.
