

Dr. Carl Michael Pfeifer, a well respected child psychiatrist, with a distinguished career, passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 20, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on December 24, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Carl’s journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to the well-being of his entire family as well as a love for academia and innovation.
Carl attended the University of Michigan, where he earned his doctorial degree in Medicine, specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Upon completion of medical school he joined the US Air Force. While stationed at Wilfred Hall Medical Center he met the two loves of his life, his wife Joan and warm winters.
Carl was Medical Director at the San Antonio Children's Center which later became The South Texas Neuropsychiatric Institute until his retirement in 1994. In addition to this work, his love of education lead him to teach in the Psychiatric Department at the UT Health Science Center for many years beyond his first retirement.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Joan Pfeifer, his son, Jordan Pfeifer, his daughter, Calla Pfeifer-Campos, his sister, Annette Vafa, his cherished grandchildren, Stormy Custer, Elijah Pfeifer, and Amelia Campos, and his great-grandchildren Evangeline Pfeifer and Henry Milburn.
Those who knew Carl will remember a man who could engage in conversation with his insights, and offer solace with his understanding. His presence was a source of stability and wisdom, and his laughter was a reminder to keep perspective.
Dr. Carl Michael Pfeifer's impact on the world is immeasurable, not only through his professional achievements but also through the wisdom he shared with so many. His was a life well-lived, and his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We bid farewell to Dr. Carl Michael Pfeifer. He will be deeply missed.
