While Carmen was working as a bookkeeper, one of her friends set her up on a date with her brother. On the day of the dinner she noticed a soldier looking at her through the window of her office for an extended period making her a bit nervous. That evening she walked into the house for the dinner date only to find that the soldier looking at her through the window was her date. She married this soldier, Joe Coy Jr., the love of her life on November 28, 1959.
While Joe continued his career in the Army, they traveled to various duty assignments, including Germany and Oklahoma, before returning to San Antonio where he worked for the Post Office and Carmen worked as a bookkeeper for a finance company. She was considered a great seamstress, enjoyed cooking, reading, art, and had studied the violin in high school. Having attended Sydney Lanier High School, she was proud to be a “Fighting Vok”.
