Carmen had a very busy life as an elementary school teacher. As a child, she spent time as an interpreter for her grandparents from her mother's side. On weekends, she would come and live with her parents and return to her grandparents for elementary school. Later, she attended Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Elementary School, Hawthorn Junior School and graduated from San Antonio Vocational and Technical School in 1943.
During World War 2, she worked as a drafting employee for the Army Map Service and assisted her parents at their grocery store. After the war, she took over the store and drove to San Marcos to attend college at Southwest Texas where she graduated with a teaching degree.
She had numerous friends that attended college with her and remained very close friends until her death. She treasured all her friendships she made throughout her life.
She enjoyed volunteering at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and cooking tamales every Christmas for her family. In addition, she traveled all over the world with her husband.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard Pfenninger, brother Pablo Garza and sister Elvira Leal.
