Carol Ann Oliver Strode was born October 7, 1937 in Temple, Texas to Bert and Edna Oliver. After fighting cancer for almost 2 years, she passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2023 with her daughter and two sons at her side. Carol grew up with her two younger sisters, Judy and Diane, primarily in Bryan, Texas where she graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School and where she met her future husband. She attended Texas Tech University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and later graduated with a BS in Home Economics Education from the University of Houston. She then attended San Antonio College and received her certification in early childhood education.
Carol married Bryan Edward Strode, Jr. on September 6, 1957 and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage until his passing in 2012. They lived in several cities while Bryan was a pilot in the Air Force before they settled in San Antonio in 1967. Carol was an active 50+ year member of Christ Episcopal Church where she served in many capacities and made many dear friends. She was a dedicated teacher, spending most of her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher at Lackland Elementary. She retired after 39 years of teaching and soon became involved as a docent at the San Antonio Zoo and an active volunteer for the Assistance League of San Antonio. She also was a volunteer at local elementary schools and loved participating in many Bible studies with friends.
Carol was a loving and supportive wife to Bryan. They enjoyed traveling together and spending time with family. Carol was a devoted Mom, Gran and Sister and she fiercely loved her 3 children, their spouses, and all the grandchildren. She was the biggest cheerleader for her 8 grandchildren - always ready to attend a performance or a game and always encouraging them to do their best. She was so excited to have a great-grandson and to recently learn that another great-grandchild is on the way. Carol was a friend to all, she loved the Lord, and was a great influence on her family. She will be greatly missed but is now rejoicing in heaven.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents, Bert Glass Oliver and Edna Randall Oliver; her husband, Bryan Edward Strode, Jr.; and her sister, Judy Oliver Thomas. She is survived by her beloved children; grandchildren; and great-grandchild: son, Mike Strode & wife Peggy, daughter, Stacy Redmond & husband Kevin, and son, Marc Strode & wife Paige. Grandchildren, Margaret Strode & fiancé Thomas Smith, Bryan Strode & wife Sarah, Mason Redmond & wife Michelle, Amy Redmond, Curran Strode, Maverick Strode, Raleigh Strode, Bo Strode; and great-grandson Luke Redmond. She is also survived by her sister, Diane Sauder (& nephew Stian) and brother-in-law Jay Thomas.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers from Amada Senior Care, Embrace Hospice, and The Retreat at Deerfield for their wonderful care and support of Carol over the past year. They are especially grateful to Nadine, Christelle, and Brianna for their warmth, kindness and dedication to Carol.
