She died at home in San Antonio on September 10, 2025.
Between these days, Carolyn lived a life of love, creativity and adventure. Growing up in rural Texas, she loved music, learning to play piano and singing in the school choir. After high school, she attended Texas Women’s University. On September 29, 1962, she married her high school sweetheart, Larry Lee Crutsinger. Carolyn devoted herself to her family, including her parents and siblings and to her friends and neighbors. While life’s adventures took them many places, Carolyn was always a faithful member of her local church and on more than one occasion worked as a church secretary. She used to joke that she trained more than one young pastor. Her faith and resilience was strong and her witness encouraged countless others.
Carolyn was an accomplished seamstress, maker and crafter. She had a special love for creating snowpeople and her craft room was her favorite room of the house, followed closely by the kitchen where she loved to cook for her family.
As a mother, she will be remembered as one who so easily loved, endured our family shenanigans, volunteered to chaperone youth group trips and welcomed all our friends into her house. She was everyone’s favorite mom.
Carolyn and Larry traveled the world together, always valuing and learning from indigenous communities, with the purpose the of supporting the international work of the YMCA and appreciating the cultures and the foods of the world.
Carolyn will be remembered for many things: her smile, her caring, her shopping stamina, her creativity and artistic gifts. Her laugh and love will be missed whenever we gather from this time and on.
She will be remembered by her family; husband for 63 years Larry, Mark (son), Lara and Beth Crutsinger-Perry (daughter and daughter in law), Caroline and Casey (grandchildren), five beloved siblings, a host of nieces, nephews, and the whole extended Crutsinger and Piper clans.
A celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church, San Antonio, on September 27, 2025, at 1pm, located at 515 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78215. The service will be held in the Wilson Chapel. Parking for the service will be in FBCSA's white, yellow, & orange parking lots. A reception will be held following the service.
