Charles Edward Ervin

Charles Edward Ervin (“Ned” to his Mississippi family and “ChuckE” to his San Antonio family) died at the age of 90 on Sunday, May 16, 2021. He was born to Tommie G. Ervin and Mary E. (McGinnis) Ervin on December 6, 1930 in Crystal Springs, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Thomas Haley Ervin II, James Wilfred Ervin Sr., Martha Gwendolyn Ervin Clow and Mary Kathryn Stutts. ChuckE is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Sylvia Garibay Ervin; his children: Gary Ervin (Rosalinda), Patricia Thompson (Scott), Andrea L. Siebold (David) and Stephanie G. Barras (Jeff); grandchildren, Brian Thompson, Amanda Ervin, Sydnee Siebold, Kayla Siebold, Claire Siebold, Savannah Barras, Charlie Barras and Violet Barras in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, as well as brother and sister-in law’s.

After graduating from High School, he honorably served his country as a member of the US Air Force, with tours of duty in Mississippi, England, California and ultimately Texas where he created his forever home in San Antonio. Following his time in the Air force he worked at Security Service until his retirement in October 1980. No one is exactly sure what his job at Security Service entailed because when asked he would simply reply, “If I tell you, I have to kill you.”

As an avid Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) Operator, ChuckE was better known as WB5OUE and enjoyed talking with fellow operators all over the world. He was also an avid reader and lover of a good crossword puzzle. His other hobbies included metal detecting, collecting telephone insulators, bowling, playing darts, and enjoying time with family and friends. Following his retirement, ChuckE was fortunate to travel extensively with his wife Sylvia across the US, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe.

Although he was a reserved man, he had a compassionate heart and a dry and witty sense of humor. He was not a man of many words, but he made sure that his words mattered. What ChuckE was most proud of in life was his family. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

On June 17, 2021, the family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 a.m., immediately followed by the Service at 12:00 noon at Porter Loring Mortuary North. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
