

Charles "Pete" Haynes passed away on November 1, 2012, just before his 83rd birthday, after an eight year, hard fought battle, with Sarcoma, Parkinson’s, and Multiple Myeloma. His loving wife, Janet, of 50 years, and his adoring daughter, Charlene, were by his side as he made his final journey to heaven.
Pete was born in Nashville, Tennessee to Beatrice Pope Haynes and Edward Haynes on November 20, 1929. He graduated from Central High School, where he played football and basketball, and then Middle Tennessee State University where he was the quarterback for four years. He was also in ROTC which led him to be commissioned into the Army, Infantry and served overseas in the Korean War as a First Lieutenant.
After service to his country, he began a long career in the grocery business. He met his loving wife, Janet, in Miami and then moved to Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, and Houston in 1969 where they resided for over 40 years. Pete was the district sales manager for Carnation Company and had a very successful career with them for over 30 years. He was well known for being the Founder of the Houston Grocery Manufacturers Retail Association which provided many scholarships over the years to students interested in the Grocery Industry.
He served in many leadership positions with the philosophy that he should give back to the community and industry that he cared so deeply about. He retired at the age of 58 and lived on his beloved ranch in Huntsville, Texas, where he founded Walker County Proud Communities. He enjoyed many years of retirement with his wife, Janet and his family. Pete loved golf, water skiing, tennis with his daughter, many years of horseback riding, fishing with his son, and rabbit/bird hunting with his friends and brother. He liked competition which was the driving force that made him so successful in all of his endeavors.
Pete is predeceased by his mother, father, and three brothers. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet W. Haynes, daughter, Dr. Charlene Haynes and Jeffery Specht, son, Randall "Bud" Haynes, grandsons that he adored, Matthew and Jacob Haynes and their mother Cathy Haynes Williams and Rocky Williams, also by Shari Asbill Hernandez and Diego Hernandez. He will be missed by many other relatives and numerous friends who loved him. Special thanks to all of the friends and family who visited, cared, and kept in touch with Pete this last year. We are truly grateful to have all of you in our lives. Services will be Thursday November 8, 2012 at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery at 11:45 a.m with military honors. Following the services, friends and family will be received at the home of Dr. Charlene Haynes from 2:00 -7:00 p.m. to honor the life of Pete Haynes. Donations may be made to MD Anderson Hospital.
