

Charles H. Rivera, age 73 of San Antonio, passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2010. Charles, known as "Jim," was born in Mercedes, Texas on May 9, 1937. After 23 years of service, he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. A Vietnam Veteran, Charles was stationed in Air Force Bases in Texas, Italy, Florida and Panama before settling in San Antonio where he lived with his wife and family for the last 33 years.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Arcelia Rivera, beloved by his children, daughters Ruby Vasquez, Debra Melvin Head, Susan Rich Herr and Rose Filemon Vela and son, James Rivera. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael Miyauchi, April Sexton, Daniel and Chrissy Vasquez, Melody Sullivan, Keith, Amanda, and Amy Head, Rebecca and Melissa Rivera, Brittany, Courtney, and Cody Herr and eleven great grandchildren. Mr. Rivera also has eleven surviving siblings, Lee Roy Mardene Rivera, Gloria Mendiola, Hilda David Pennington, Richard Maria Elena Rivera, Robert Rosie Rivera, David "Rudy" Josie Rivera, Norma Herby Cruz, Olga John Hunt, Joel Rivera Bernal, Ishmael Rivera Victoria Bernal and Mary Mclaughlin. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Consuelo Rivera and sister Ophelia Garcia.
A rosary will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at Porter Loring Chapel, 1101 McCullough in San Antonio and funeral rites are scheduled for 12:30 PM at Porter Loring with internment thereafter at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, nurses, staff and patients at Audie Murphy Extended Care Therapy Center for the care and friendship extended to "King Charles" during his stay.
