As a young child, Charlie saw horse-drawn fire trucks rumbling down the often-unpaved streets of San Antonio. His memories of the Depression years were of having fun while living in Marfa and Brackettville. Charlie graduated from Thomas Edison High School in 1937 and served in WWII as a combat infantryman with the US Army 4th Infantry Division in Europe. Arriving on the beaches of Normandy on the day after the D-Day invasion, Charlie experienced the extreme horrors of war. His Army division performed the hand-to-hand combat that liberated Paris. Charlie avoided Nazi snipers, as well as the firebombs dropped by the Luftwaffe. After the war, he worked in the US Civil Service with the VA, BAMC and Ft. Sam Houston in Civilian Personnel, retiring in 1976. He particularly enjoyed his travels in Europe while assigned to Munich, Germany.
As an avid golfer, he found his after retirement work in the Golf Pro Shops at Brooks AFB and Ft. Sam Houston very enjoyable.
Charlie was a long-time member of St. Marks Episcopal Church and later of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He is an alumnus of St. Mary's University and a member of Lonnie Irvin Masonic Lodge #1309, the Scottish rite, and a long-time member of the Alzafar Shrine Golf Unit. Throughout his life, Charlie was always friendly and giving. It was rare that he did not have a smile on his face.
The family would like to express extreme gratitude to his loving caregivers, Marilyn Stewart and Vicky Muntean.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
