He was born September 13, 1924, on the Pitchfork Ranch in Dickens County, Texas, to Cleo and Edna Gunnels.
Charlie was a proud WWII veteran who served in the Pacific Theater and was a Purple Heart recipient.
He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local No. 14 for over 50 years and was the Training Director of the Carpenter's Apprenticeship School for 19 years.
Having skilled hands and an eye for detail, Charlie left his mark all over San Antonio, as he helped build Blossom Athletic Center, Roosevelt High School, John Jay High School and North Star Mall, which is just a short list of his accomplishments.
He also loved to collect antique carpentry tools as a reminder of the history of his trade and his beginnings.
A Christian, a skilled carpenter, a proud veteran, a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, Charlie Gunnels was a part of America's Greatest Generation. He was a gentle giant who touched many lives and hearts.
Buildings around the city will serve as memorials to his hard work, dedication, and craftsmanship but his true legacy will live on through the family he has built. Charlie will be missed by all who loved and knew him.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Esther Gunnels; daughters, Loretta Wallis and husband, Terry; Janette Jackson and husband, Tom; grandson, Keith Vetters and wife, Kristie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 12568, San Antonio, Texas 78212 or a charity of your choice.
