Charlie Marx, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away on August 9, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. Born in 1951 to Benson and Fannie Marx, Charlie grew up on a farm in Austin, Texas and graduated from Austin Lanier High School, where he found a love for running track & field. He won medals in numerous long-distance races his junior and senior years. His most impressive win was first place in the two-mile relay at the Texas Relays in 1969.
Charlie went on to graduate from Southwest Texas State University in 1974 with a degree in psychology and worked his entire career as a salesperson in the packaging industry. Sales fit his outgoing personality perfectly, and he made many lasting friendships with colleagues and clients alike. His warmth and humor made him not only successful in his field but also deeply respected and beloved by those he worked with.
During his junior year at Southwest Texas State University, Charlie met Lee Ellen Lanford—the love of his life. They married in February of 1974 and spent 51 beautiful years together. Their marriage was a quiet and enduring testament to devotion, faith, and friendship. Charlie and Lee Ellen shared a life, raising a family with love and purpose, and he was a devoted member of Concordia Lutheran Church since 1976, where he served as head usher for more than 15 years.
Rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth, Charlie spent much of his free time grilling, playing with his dogs, doing word search puzzles and reading Westerns at his favorite place - his lake house on Lake Buchanan. He loved traveling, Texas Longhorns football, sports cars, counting change and doting on his only grandchild.
Charlie, now with Jesus in his forever home, is survived by his loving wife, Lee Ellen Marx, daughter Jennifer Van Cleave, son Ryan Marx and grandson Zachary Van Cleave. Charlie is also survived by his brother Jerrall Marx. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Ruby.
A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, 16801 Huebner Road, San Antonio, Texas.
