Charlotte Barton, a long time San Antonio resident, passed away May 2 following a brief illness. Charlotte was born in July 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio. Growing up during the depression, Charlotte spent summers picking strawberries to earn money for movies, clothes, and a new bicycle. After high school graduation, Charlotte started work as a secretary.
Charlotte met the love of her life, Bob Barton, at a church Halloween party in 1951. They married in 1952 and started their family in 1954. Charlotte and Bob moved to Texas in early 1957, and two more children were later born in Texas.
With three children, Charlotte happily took on the role of homemaker, cooking meals and baking the family a cake every Friday to mark the weekend. Whenever Charlotte was asked to help PTA, teachers, Scouts or church, she always said yes. Once the children were older, Charlotte returned to the workforce, where she served as a secretary for several churches, and later for the Boy Scouts. She retired from her last job at Lance in 1996.
A long-time member of Trinity Baptist Church, she sang in the adult choir for many years, including the annual “Living Christmas Tree”. She also enjoyed her time as a member of the Sonshine Singers, where she and other senior adults would sing, dance, and bring smiles to residents of nursing homes in the San Antonio area.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband Bob and her mother Helen Chaney.
Charlotte is survived by her three children and their spouses: Jim Barton (Cynthia), Laura Stluka (Thomas), and Robert Barton (Carol). In addition, she is survived by her five grandchildren: Kellen Barton (Jessica), Meredith Grigoryan-Barton (Arsen), Trevor Stluka, Colton Barton, and Ashley Stluka. She also had three great grandchildren.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Emerald Oaks Retirement Resort for all they did for Charlotte these last five years as a resident. In addition, the family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care provided by the staff of Vitas Hospice and the staff of AllCare during her final days.
A Celebration of Life for Charlotte will be held on Thursday, June 3rd at 11 AM at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, with the Reverend William D. Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Salvation Army.
