Charlotte Woodley Bauerle was born January 8, 1932 and spent her childhood years on a farm outside Carrizo Springs. The sole child of older parents, with a dog and a horse she called her own, she played by herself amongst the vegetable fields, where she developed a headstrong spirit and strong drive of self will.
As she entered her high school years the family moved to Uvalde where she enrolled and, with her athletic prowess, assisted her track team to victory winning the title of State Champion and was named by San Antonio Express-News as one of the "Golden Girls" of 1948, the All South Texas basketball team. When she graduated Uvalde High she was sixteen.
In the fall of '48 she boarded the Stephens College railcar with fellow students and traveled from San Antonio to Columbia, Missouri. She completed her Associate in Art degree from Stephens College's Junior College Department in May, 1950. She was eighteen. Following that she continued her education attending The University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1950.
Despite pursuing her education Charlotte was a product of her times where women did not pursue professional careers. This was a time when most life was rural life. Men went off to war and women stayed behind. There were no frozen dinners, few had TVs and fewer still had air conditioning. Though growing up during the epoch of the "Greatest Generation" her greatest goal in life was to become a wife and mother. At nineteen she fell in love with a Texas cowboy, quit school and began her family. Her first child was born the day before turning twenty.
Following her husband to San Antonio and at the age of twenty-five she moved into the house she made into a home where she lived for the remainder of her life: sixty-five years.
Besides being a wife to her husband and a mother to her children she was a disciple of Christ. This was her greatest joy and greatest gift to her family. Rarely has one morning passed into noon that one would not find her seated in bed with her head bowed saying her morning prayers. Her earnest faithfulness to Christ and her reliance upon Him in all matters did more to bring her children to Christ than anything else she could say or do. This is her finest and greatest legacy.
Surrounded by her family Charlotte Bauerle passed peacefully into the waiting hands of her Lord Jesus on September 14, 2022 at the age of 90. She is the daughter of Fred Ehlers and Ella Louise Herweck both of San Antonio.
