Clarence (Al) Mangold died May 7, 2019 of natural causes. He was born in San Antonio in 1932 to Clarence Albert Mangold, Sr. and Velma Ann Mangold. Notably, Al comes from a line of early pioneers who settled The Republic of Texas. In 1845, the family Patriarch, Georges Mangold, came from Alsace-Lorraine, France to farm in Castroville, Texas.
Al lived in San Antonio during his formative years. He earned his Eagle Scout Badge as a Boy Scout. He graduated from Central Catholic High School with honors in 1949. He then entered St. Mary’s University where he was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps and graduated in 1953.
Following graduation, Al married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Mangold née Cicero, and then entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. He earned his crew member wings as an aerial observer in the Field Artillery in Germany during the Cold War. Al was also a Vietnam Veteran; serving with the 25th Infantry Division from 1966-1967. Upon his return home, he entered George Washington University in Washington, DC. His attendance culminated with his Masters of Business Administration Degree in Computer Science. Al was one of the forerunners in the early development of Information Technology. He subsequently served as an Automation Data Processing officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency and later the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium. Al and Nancy both agreed the Belgian assignment was the best in their long career. They were consummate hosts for innumerable, international gatherings at their home; fostering good will and camaraderie within the NATO community!
Al’s final Army assignment was Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio where he retired in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel; capping a twenty-seven-year career. Following this, Al taught Computer Science at San Antonio College.
Al and Nancy were married for fifty two years. The marriage ended with Nancy’s death in 2005. Al and Nancy will be buried together at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Al was also predeceased by his younger siblings, Margaret Powrie and Charles Mangold and his Granddaughter Kelley Mangold. Al is survived by his six children: Douglas (& Deb) Mangold, Lynn (& Steve) Nichols, Linda Mangold, Cynthia Mangold, Gilbert (& Theresa) Mangold and Lisa (& Rob) McLaughlin. Additionally, he is survived by his youngest brother, Richard (& Phyllis) Mangold, 12 Grandchildren, and 4 Great Grandchildren.
Al wanted to make sure all of his children and grandchildren shared his passion for playing poker. So, anytime there was a lull in the action or a rainy day at the beach he would take out his poker chips and cards and get a game started. He was a wonderful father and husband and will truly be missed.
