He was a very pleasant trooper and made us smile every chance we got to see him be it at conventions or when we went to Ft. Bragg. On behalf of the Brown family we would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the family of DSL/SSG Clay Bowen. We were both disheartened to hear of his death. 
My name is 2LT Tauesha Brown Cookie I served as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Jackson, SC with DSL/SSG Bowen in BCO 1/13th. What I remember about serving with him is that he knew his job well and did an excellent job training civilians into Soldiers. Besides that he had a fun loving attitude that kept me laughing. When he sang he could motivate anyone on their worst day. It did not surprise me that he became a member of the prestigious group of Drill Sergeant Leaders those who train our trainers. My husband DSL/SFC Brown also worked with him for a short time. 
God bless his soul, and the life of his family. He will be missed.

My heart goes out to the family of such a fine young man. I remember Clay as a baby, and I was fortunate enough to become re-acquainted with him as a teen-ager. His dad, Guy, brought him in to my office when Clay first started to drive. What a personable, conscientious,caring young man. His father's pride in him was obvious. Guy knew his son was an exceptional young man. I consider myself blessed to have known them both.

Please accept our sincere sympathy for the loss of your Son. I have taken the liberty of posting SSG Clay Bowen's obituary to facebook to pay tribute to our Fallen American Hero. My son, Jacob, was in the Primrose School class that sent a care package to Clay recently. It gave our kids a face and a soldier to identify with who was fighting for their safety and freedom. As a mom I thank you for the man you raised. As a military wife, my heart breaks for your loss.

Clay - Even though I only met you a few times, I feel like I knew you since you were a little boy. Your Mother and Step-father were so very proud of you and we spent many many nights laughing over your antics. You will be missed, not only by you family, but by everyone who ever knew you. Reesa and Buddy, I have no real concept of what you are going through. Both of you are my dearest friends and I can only offer my deepest heartfelt sorrow.

We never saw Clay with anything but a smile on his face, an upbeat attitude and a song. Whenever he was in town, he always came by the office. Inspired by another Chorus member, I swiped a picture of Clay off his MySpace account and made it *my* profile picture on my FaceBook profile in his honor the day I found out. I have been letting everyone I know about how sad I am. I have been telling everybody about his charisma, how likable he was, how socially inclined he was. 
He was usually the loudest one in the Chorus to play Spades. He usually was the one to be scheming about how to give cherry-bellies to soldiers for their birthday - he schemed about mine for my 33rd and 34th birthdays. 
He was also, for a short time, my squad leader. A few times he was also Platoon Sergeant. 
I also will always enjoy the song, "It's Alright," the most off our 2005 Chorus CD. That's my favorite song and I love his bass singing on it the best. If I remember correctly, he sang on all but one song on the CD, which means he performed more than anybody else. 
I was happy for him when he upgraded from his VW Passat, and when he became a Drill Sergeant. 
His energy was missed in the Chorus. He had a vibe that flourished when he was doing his pranks- for example, whenever we would audition a new singer or "test-out" a singer on SD Special Duty status, Clay would always initiate getting us to go along with him by telling the new guy false details about how his audition or test sucked and that we had to send him back to his assigned unit a.s.a.p. Then we would let the new guy head for the door before we would reveal our little shin-dig by how we'd all burst out laughing- and in our laughter, we'd tell the confused new guy he is ok, that he's in the Chorus and we were just razzing him. I think everyone would agree that it was things like that that are what spiced up our days in the Chorus. 
I will miss him- I will miss not being able to ever see him again or to catch through the grape vine how he is progressing as a soldier. He was a fitting soldier. He wasn't afraid to be hard-nosed, and he took charge with confidence. 
I will miss him very much and I am so sorry that I can't be there. I am tempted to explain why, but please know that it's honestly not an invalid excuse. I genuinely feel that Clay deserves to have a packed house. I will pray for his family and friends. This is an absolute loss for us all. I will miss him and am so sorry that I can't be there for him, his family and friends. I am so sad. I will miss him. I still can't believe it.

May God comfort you. Your son is a hero and Americans are indebted to his valor and service.

DS Bowen, you were such an asset to this country's military. You were not only a good man but an amazing NCO who the soldiers could trust. My best memories in the military are with you and DS Case back in 2006. Thank you for being a genuine person with a huge heart, you will be missed beyond words.

Dearest family of Staff Sergeant Bowen, 
 You are all in my prayers. I did not know your son but he sounds like he was an amazing young man, someone that every soldier would want to have for a Drill Sergeant and Mentor. As the mom of a young soldier in the Army training for EOD, I thank our Lord daily that there are young men and women who are willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. I pray that God wraps his arms around you, please take comfort in knowing that Clay is in a much better place and that someday you will be re-united with him for eternity! God Bless You!

My Brother... Clay and I amongst a few of us were stationed togeter at Fort Jackson, SC. We called him our big Brother because he looked after us and took care of us just like a big brother would. He will be missed dearly and in my heart forever as my big brother. I love you Clay!

Jesus says in John 10:11- "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." SSG Bowen gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country, and we are forever indebted. May God's peace be with you; please know that though we never had the privelege of knowing him, we are so thankful for Clay. Clay was one of the most exhuberant and enthusiastic kids I've ever known. Although i have many memories of Clay, the one I remember the most is Clay at two years old. He was playing in the pool and singing Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. After the verse,"and if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows," he added his own verse, "like a light bulb." Norman, Spring, Jon and I would get so tickled and laugh which of course would encourage him to keep singing. We are all so saddened by his death. The last time I saw him he had just choreographed a break dance...and gave me a demonstration in the middle of the family room. He was a ball of energy and sunshine. Most important he is a hero who died so that all of us may live. I only knew him for a short time but will never never forget him. God bless you Reesa, Buddy and all of Clay's family and friends.

Clay's death is shocking and a terrible loss. I never had the honor of knowing him as an adult, but he was a delightful child and I can tell from his obituary that he grew up to be a good man and a wonderful role model. Your pain must be unbearable. I pray with all my heart that angels will surround you and give you comfort during this difficult time.

Our prayers and gratitude are with his family. We are thankful that so many of our young people know that 'freedom isn't free' and are proud to help keep us free. We ask that God grants you His peace.

My son was in the HV with Sargent Bowen when he was killed in Afghanistan. My son's name is Alexander Ayala AJ. My son and my family are heartbroken over the loss of such a great sargent and friend. I was the Company Commander of Foxtrot 1-13 Inf at FT Jaclson. My comapany was right next to his, Bravo 1-13 Inf. I can say that I am truly sad buy the loss of such a fine soldier who set the example for all to emulate. Several years ago, while on leave in San Antonio, Sergeant Bowen, at great risk to his own safety in a dangerous situation, saved my daughter Lauren, by direct confrontation, from the hands of local criminals intent on her harm. I never had an opportunity to thank him for his actions that night. He has long been a hero in my eyes. I thank him now. I am truly very sorry for your loss.
