Clyde Alexander Tew, Sr., 83, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on January 21, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Louella Marie Roy and Clyde Alexander Pardue. After his father passed away, Clyde's mother married Woodrow Wilson Tew and they raised Clyde and his two brothers, Richard Allen and Wayne Ellis. Clyde often shared happy childhood memories of family camping trips, adventures encountered on his paper route, and riding the trolley to the movie house with his brothers. Clyde graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport in 1955 before attending Texas A&M University. Clyde was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration and was commissioned into the United States Army on May 23, 1959. Clyde married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Woodard, and together they had four children, Janna Carol, Clyde Alexander Jr., Pamela Lynn & Christopher Scott. Clyde proudly served his country for 5 years in the 502nd Airborne Battle Group, 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles), Special Forces, Green Berets. He thought it was pretty neat that the first time he went up in an airplane, he jumped out of it! Later, Clyde moved to Overland Park, Kansas and married the love of his life, Jane Ann Tough on Valentines Day, 1970. They raised three children together, Sarah Jane, AnnaMarie, & Bryan Ashby. The family moved to San Antonio in 1989 where Clyde worked for USAA until his retirement in 2005.
Clyde could regularly be found attending football and basketball games, dance performances and other school activities his children were involved in. He enjoyed reading, working all kinds of puzzles and watching John Wayne movies. Clyde was an avid Texas Aggie, he liked nothing better than being in Kyle Field (a season ticket holder since 1993). He was very proud that Sarah Jane, AnnaMarie and Bryan are "Fightin Texas Aggies." He grew in his faith along with other family members through Bible Study Fellowship. He and Janie have been active members of Coker United Methodist Church since 1990.
Clyde began cycling in 2007 after retirement to "stay young for his family." When he first joined Teams in Training, most of the team were much younger. They didnt think the "old" guy would be back. But the "old" guy did come back. With his beloved cycling friends, he successfully completed numerous bicycle rides, including 8 century rides, which raised money for ongoing research and treatment for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. One of his proudest moments was participating in the 2018 America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe with 4 of his 7 children. Clyde was often traveling and attending various family gatherings like graduations, weddings, sporting events, and reunions. Once, he and Janie attended the high school graduation for one granddaughter in Oklahoma and drove all day to attend the high school graduation for another granddaughter in Louisiana the next day. In more recent years, Clyde and Janie had begun traveling overseas enjoying river cruises and visits to Paris, Budapest and the D-Day Beaches in Normandy. Although Clyde may be remembered as a quiet man, he will also be remembered as fiercely loyal, loving, and devoted to his family and friends. He will remain in the hearts of many forever. In the kind words of a family friend, "Getting to know Clyde through the eyes of his children and personally over the years has been such an honor. I have learned and grown so much from him and the legacy he and Janie have created. I have seen what loyalty, friendship, family, and supportive relationships look like. I have been inspired by his wisdom, discipline, passion for life, and willingness to continue to grow as a person and challenge himself as he aged. I have been moved by the love he shared with Janie, the joy in his eyes around his grandkids and great grandkids, and the pride he has for his children. I have watched him love his children unconditionally and navigate the hard times and the good times with class, grace, and grit. I am a better person, mother, and wife for having known and experienced Clyde and the Tew family in my life."
