

Col. Herman Dale Brown, Jr passed away on April 4, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of eighty-three. He was born on August 10, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Mary Hunter and Herman Dale Brown.
Col. Brown’s early ambition was to join the military. Following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin, he entered the Army in July 1961 as a Medical Service Corps officer and had a distinguished career that spanned 30 years with multiple assignments across the United States, Vietnam, South Korea, and Germany. Col. Brown served as an adviser to the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army and held key logistical leadership positions at Darnall Army Community Hospital, Presidio of Monterey, and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Highlights of his career were the assumption of command of the 32nd Medical Depot, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, being selected to become Chief Administrator of the Heidelberg Army Hospital, Germany, and later Chief Administrator of Martin Army Community Hospital, Fort Benning, Georgia.
Col. Brown was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. His awards and decorations included the Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Achievement Medal.
After retiring with the rank of Colonel in July 1991, Col. Brown became Chief Executive Officer for a prestigious psychiatric hospital in Columbus, Georgia, and later served with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals for nearly 20 years.
In retirement, Col Brown and his loving wife, Barbara, had a passion for traveling to Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach to enjoy fellowship with close military friends. Dale’s fondness and skill in outdoor grilling were honed in such gatherings.
Throughout Col. Brown’s life, he became an ardent supporter of the U.S. Army, promoting its merits to both young and old alike. As a devoted Catholic, he lived life to the fullest as a person of action and deliverer of promises. Col. Brown was a loving father to Jeffrey Brown and Michael Brown (Lisa) and grandfather to Hunter Brown, Nicholas Brown, Parker Brown, Seth Brown, and Hayden Brown. Family and friends have many cherished memories of Dale and will fondly remember him.Colonel Brown was preceded in death by his parents Mary Hunter and Herman Dale Brown, his wife LTC (Ret) Barbara Brown, and his sister, Judy Osborne.
