

Consuelo “Chelo” Hernandez Massiatte, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas. Born on April 14, 1930, in San Antonio, Chelo lived a life rich in faith, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
She was the cherished mother of Consuelo Hernandez (preceded in death by Jesse Hernandez), Margaret Tello (Roland Tello), Daniel Massiatte (preceded by Bertha Massiatte), Mary Ortiz (preceded by Ruben Ortiz), Blanche Mendoza (Victor Gonzales), and Joe Ray Massiatte (Becky Massiatte). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Massiatte, and sons George “Rabbit” Massiatte and Johnny Hernandez Massiatte Sr. (wife, Gloria C. Massiatte).
Her legacy continues through 20 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Chelo’s warmth and grace touched the lives of all who knew her. She had a joyful spirit and a sense of humor that could light up any room. Despite the size of her family, she remained deeply connected to each one, always asking about their lives and offering words of encouragement and love. Her heart was open to all, she welcomed others with kindness, offered help even when she had little, even though she only had a 2-bedroom home, she always had a bed to spare.
For 56 years, she resided at 315 Simon Street, affectionately known as the Matriarch of Simon Street. Her home was a beacon of hospitality and tradition, especially during her beloved annual tamaladas, where generations gathered in her kitchen to share food, laughter, and love.
A woman of deep faith, Chelo was an active member of her parish, serving as a Guadalupana and a devoted participant in the Cursillo movement. Her faith was evident in her daily life and her selfless service to others, including caring for ailing neighbors and always placing the needs of others before her own. She loved dancing, mariachis, cheering for the Spurs and Dallas Cowboys, and watching her favorite novelas. She was a devoted softball mom and became well known for her birthday calls, where she joyfully sang Las Mañanitas to family and friends.
Chelo will be remembered not only as the strong and loving mother of her eight children, but as a nurturing figure to many more. She embodied resilience, humility, and boundless love.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, Texas, with a rosary to follow at 6:00 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church, 1619 South Flores Street, San Antonio, Texas.
Interment will follow in San Fernando Cemetery II, 746 Castroville Road, San Antonio, Texas.
