You are greatly missed CSM!  May you Rest In Peace Compadre! 

Today I received my NGAT (National Guard Assoc. of TX) quarterly magazine and I was saddened to read that one our Brothers in the military had passed away.

My heart goes out to the Castorena Family wishing you peace and comfort during these difficult times.

I new CSM and I also served with him in Afghanistan in 2012-2013 and we both retired afterwards.  There are many CSM's that are considered leaders, but very few that are called influential leaders.  He wasn't one of them that had to yell or try to instill fear or demand respect from his followers and soldiers, they just followed because he was admired for who he was.  A true leader of men and women.

Thank you for watching over your Soldiers and setting the example.   You will truly be missed.

Our condolences to the family. There are no words at a time like this that can relieve the pain of this loss.  My wife and I first met David at VFW Post 9174. He was a fine Member of the Post and liked his Tejano music and was liked by everyone. He asked many questions about the VFW that I hope I answered for him. David was a kind and gentle man. He was always kind and respectfully to all he met.  When we saw each other at work, he always had an encouraging word!  He will be deeply missed.  I know that Heaven has definitely gained another angel.  I send my deepest condolences to his family.  I pray that God will send comfort to your hearts.

I write this with a very heavy heart, David was one of my employees and one of my favorites. I am so saddened that he is no longer with us. My deepest sympathies to his family. He is greatly and dearly missed.

My condolences to you for your loss. My family and I will be praying for you through this tough time. I met David in the Fall of 1998, It was my privilege to serve with him for many years and we shared many experiences both professional and personal. We were good friends and tried to keep in touch even after both of us had retired. He always reached out to me to see how I was doing or to invite me out to fellowship with him and others who served together.  I am one of many who will miss him for who he was as a person and for the type of heart he had. He made an impact on my life, both professionally and personally, that I will never forget.

My deepest and sincerest condolences to the Castorena family.  I served with SGM Castorena prior to his retirement from the military and he was truly the epitome of a true professional.  A man of great character and exemplary leader.  My prayers are with you all during this time of sorry.  

Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. May you be comforted by the outpouring of love surrounding you and your family. Words cannot even begin to express my sorrow for CSM David Castorena. He was a really generous SGM. We deployed together in 2012. Right after our deployment he became my CSM in Recruiting and Retention. He was always sharp, professional and held a high standard. Many leaders didn’t recognize standards but he certainly did! Both presence and work related.  CSM Castorena you will be missed!! May your heart and soul find peace and comfort. In God’s name. 

I met SGM when I in-processed SGT Castorena into the AGR program in 1998.  His 1st duty station was in Recruiting and Retention (R&R) Command, Lubbock TX and I was a SGT/E5 myself.  He was a comedian and I befriended him immediately! We always stayed in contact throughout our careers then 11 years later, I was selected to be the Region IV R&R Commander and  David was my SGM.   He was one of the most superb NCO’s that I have had the pleasure to work with and  has always been a precious  friend!!!  He is truly missed !

I was Honored to be David’s Best Friend growing up in Muleshoe, Tx. Spending our 
Jr high& High school times together. Always hanging out, going dragging around Muleshoe& Clovis NM.  I could ALWAYS count on Him for anything. He always had My Back!!!! Went are own ways but Always stayed in touch. He became a Great Man, Mentor, Soldier&Friend to so many. But especially a Generous& Loving Father to His daughters&sons. It’s Truly a Great Loss to myself(My Family)but mostly to his own Loving (Castorena) Familia. You’ll be missed My Brother, Job Well DONE , R.I.P🙏

It was an honor to serve with SGM Castorena. He held himself and  his soldiers to a high standard. He expected the best and he gave the best. I will never forget the times we had, and I will cherish the memories we had together. Even the ones we can't remember. Rest in peace DC, until we meet again.

I met David for the first time probably in 1997 or 1998.  He was on the same recruiting team as Theresa.  It was the far southwestern team that went all the way to El Paso.   I think David was an E-5 back then.  I always liked his attitude and I could tell he was a  very dedicated and loyal person.   I'd run into him here and there  and saw him climb the ranks to the point of becoming a mentor to others.  I didn't know his family but I wish all of them my deepest condolences in these difficult times.   David was a good man and patriot and that is what I will most remember when I think about him.  

I met David when I joined Recruiting Command. I worked in Austin, and he always came by the S1 section when in town to see me, say “hi,” and check on his Soldiers. He was a fierce family man, Soldier, leader, and human being. The world is a better place because of him. Rest In Peace, David. 

David was a great friend! He and I worked together for many years and shared many great memories.  I will miss his sense of humor, his council and his friendship. He was a great man with great courage and great patriotism! This world is a better place because of him. Rest In Peace friend. 

He was my friend!!! I am absolutely at a  lost for words. CSM Castorena was the ultimate professional and taught us all what it meant to be a leader. He was a mentor to so many of us and set the example of how it is supposed to be done. Rest easy CSM , until we meet again. 

I am saddened to hear that my dear friend past away.  I always admire him when he was a young soldier and in later years when he became a senior CSM.  My sincere condolences to the Castorena family, and I pray that the Lord embraces your heart during this difficult period.   David, job well done.  RIP.

David was a great Father, Friend, NCO, and Soldier. Not much more to be wanted. He cared deeply for his family, friends, and Soldiers. Dedicated and focused in every endeavor. I met David in Recruiting school and we’ve been close friends every since. I was so impressed at his level of commitment to his daughters and while eating dinner with him and his daughters I remarked as such. His response will forever be etched in my mind.  “Hey, those are my baby girls. I’d do anything for them, whatever it takes, hey, you know”. This life is but a blip on the radar of eternity. I know David is in heaven watching over his girls and grand babies, smiling and knowing he did it right. Thank you David for your friendship, for the laughs we shared, bread we broke, drinks we drank and all the fond memories that go along with those. Love you bro!



CSM (r) Castorena was a mission focused professional Soldier who always placed his Soldiers first. I learned so much from him. He took a chance on me to run his team (Team 14, Regulators) 10 years ago. His mentorship helped create to my leadership style and  I will always remember him for that. Thank you CSM for the leadership, coaching and guidance.    

He will be missed throughout the Texas Army National Guard.

CSM (r) Castorena always had a positive,  professional outlook who cared deeply about his Solders and command.  He always strove to provide the best that he could for all around him, loving his family and serving his country, state, and NCOs.

He was respected and will be missed as a friend and fellow NCO.
