Cyndi was the fourth of five children born to Gilbert and Gerda Mork on November 2,1946 in Rockford, Illinois. Her early years were spent enjoying school activities such as the Swedish Club, Sunday school and beach time with her friends. Cyndi attended and graduated from Trinity College in Rockford, Illinois; following graduation she attended nursing school at Swedish American Hospital.
Cyndi married her college sweetheart Steven Smykay and after he enlisted in the Air Force, they started their life in San Antonio.
Cyndi’s greatest joy in life was being a loving mother and protector to three strong boys and one joyful daughter. Cyndi’s devotion to raising her children and working as a nurse was what made her the strong woman she was and shaped her children to become who they are today. She always enjoyed being outdoors and swimming, she loved taking trips to Sand Lake in Wisconsin to spend time with family or Texas summers spent swimming at the Cabana Club. She spent her free time traveling with multiple church mission groups spreading the gospel and helping care for sick patients in need. One of her greatest accomplishments was having the honor to meet and work with Mother Theresa. Cyndi will always be remembered by her family as a kind, selfless woman who loved taking care of others and would do anything for anyone in need, even if it was just a fresh batch of Swedish pancakes.
Her family would like to thank Just Like Home Care for taking such wonderful care of Cyndi for the past 3 years. She battled Alzheimer’s for over 14 long years and despite the tolls the disease took, her sweet smile and contagious laughter always shined through each day until her passing.
Cyndi is survived by her loving sons Todd (Shannon) Smykay, Trevor (Erin) Smykay, Chad (Shannon) Smykay and loving daughter Anika Smykay. She was an amazing grandmother and great grandmother to seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Fletcher Smykay, Audrey Smykay, Brayden Smykay, Tristan Smykay, Ainsley Koch, Ashley (Travis) Lindsey and daughter Brooklyn, Zachary (Kelsey) Renda and son Greyson, brothers Jim Mork, Rick Mork, and sister Lynn Erickson, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.Cyndi is preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Gerda, and her sister, Jann Erickson.
