

In January 1951, after one and a half years at Duke University in Durham, NC, he entered the US Air Force at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, TX. He attended Travis Park Methodist Church, where he met and married Meril Judith (Judy) Spellman on August 10, 1953. He became a Local Pastor and served at Edgewood Methodist Church for three years.
After Dan graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, they moved to Atlanta, GA, for three years of seminary and ordination. Ministry included eight years as missionaries in the (previously Belgian) Congo; six years as teachers at Navajo Methodist Mission School in Farmington, NM; 12 years as chaplain at Methodist Children's Home in Waco, TX; and 13 years as Associate Minister at Trinity United Methodist Church in San Antonio, TX. He retired in 1997.
Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Judy, and six children: Kellie Sue Hooker (Robert), Bobbi Gayle Thomas (Jim), Dan Gilbert, Jr. (Charlotte), Joseph Spellman (Lisa), Dana Lynn Pearson (Joe), and Laurance Paul (Christi). Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two brothers: Joseph Adams and Woodward Adams, Jr., and numerous nephews and nieces.
Dan spent his later years trying to be the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and best friend possible.
On Saturday, August 20th at 10:00 AM a Memorial Service will be held at Travis Park United Methodist Church, 230 E. Travis.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Travis Park United Methodist Church Homeless Ministry or to the Haven for Hope.
