Darryl Mix was born in Denver, Colorado on January 9, 1963 and he died on March 10, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas. He and his wife Darcy and their two children, Eleanor and Everett, moved to San Antonio from California in 2002.
Darryl first left his home in El Cajon, California in 1981 to attend the University of Redlands, where he was an engaged student and active in residential life, including as president of his fraternity, Alpha Gamma Nu. He studied history at Redlands, and ever after remained a lifelong learner and reader of art, history, music, politics and more. He met his wife Darcy at Redlands, a graduate of the Class of 1988.
After college, Darryl began a long and successful career in non-profit management with organizations as large and diverse as the American Heart Association, March of Dimes, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and others.
Once transplanted to San Antonio, Darryl began his professional life as a consultant for Art Pace, an arts space and laboratory founded by artist, collector, and businesswoman Linda Pace. This sparked a passion for art and he founded two gallery spaces for practicing, contemporary artists from Texas and the Southwest. His Art SA Gallery was located in a charming, converted Victorian at 108 E. Mistletoe. Darryl was also an active volunteer and supporter of The Southwest School of Art, as well as the Alamo Heights School Foundation.
Well beyond his professional and community work, and most important to most, Darryl was a person of the highest character and sharpest wita fiercely loyal and fun friend to many, many for all his years. And above all these things he loved his daughter Eleanor, his son Everett, and his wife Darcy.
Darryl Mix was predeceased by his father, Richard Mix, and is survived by his mother Mary, stepmother Mary Ann, two older brothers Larry Mix and Roger Mix, as well as by his wife Darcy Mix, and their two children, Eleanor and Everett. He is missed and remembered by many more friends from coast to coast, and very keenly by Joe Woodward and his brothers of Alpha Gamma Nu. May he now have his Peace.
In celebration of his life and work, a memorial reception will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 5:00 p.m., in the Coates Chapel on the Ursuline Campus of The Southwest School of Art, 300 Augusta Street, San Antonio, Texas. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to support scholarships for artists of all ages taking classes or attending The Southwest School of Art.
