

Darwell E. Stowe succumbed to his battle with Leukemia March 15, 2014 at the age of 86. He was born in San Antonio on August 21, 1927, the second of three children to Charles and Helen Heiligman Stowe. In 1945 at age 17 he joined the U. S. Navy where he served in the Japanese Occupation Forces aboard the USS Orca & participated in the 2 atomic bomb tests in Operation Crossroads. After discharge he attended and graduated from St. Mary’s University in 1951. Darwell retired from the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine in 1983 where he worked for 24 years as a research physicist.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, and his brother Charles Jr, while serving in WWII, also his brother-in-law and sister, Patrick and Patsy Kaine of Lakeway, TX. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lucky; daughters, Tamara Stowe, Kelley Stowe Heathcock, and step-son, Kevin Vasbinder. He has 6 grandchildren, Wesley Heathcock, Corry Heathcock, Tracy Heathcock Eckard, Lauren, Elijah and Easton Vasbinder. He also has 3 great-grandchildren, Emily Eckard, Cora Heathcock and Asher Stowe Heathcock. He will be missed by his many other relatives and friends. We wish to thank Dr. Rodger Lyons and his staff at the Cancer Care Center for five and a half years of devoted, competent and compassionate care.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
