David was one of my best friends. He really helped me get through my divorce several years ago. My favorite memory is when he spent the whole day with me at CarMax so that the dealer wouldn't take advantage of me! I laughed so much when I spent time with David. I think the best joke he played on me was just recently. I asked one of his nieces who was going to take care of his cat " Ebony" . I told her that I would but she always hissed at me when I would visit . The niece told me that the cat does that to everyone! David told me that Ebony only did that to me! So I guess he got the last laugh! I miss talking to him , watching Spurs games and I am so sad that he won't be there to help me through UIL as usual. He was the greatest teacher and a great friend. I'm pretty lost without you David but I know that you are in a better place. Thank you for being my family when I was alone. Love you forever!

A week ago today, I received a call that saddened me to the core of my heart!  My choir teacher from 6th & 12th grade had passed away.  David Custer encouraged me to do my best and to never give up.  The last time I saw him was in April when we judged UIL Concert & Sight Reading.  We had a great time catching up.  He said to me...you were in the first class I ever taught, you were in the first class I taught when I moved to high school, you taught at my feeder school and now we're judging together,  that's full circle, girl!  I am so proud of the choir director you have become!   Him saying that made me feel special!  (Of course I had tears in my eyes!)  David's life ended unexpectedly but it's not how long you lived, it's how meaningful it was.  David's homegoing service was proof of that!   Many people came out and showed their love for him.  It is good to grieve but don't grieve like you won't see him again!!!   The grief won't last long but the celebration will last forever. We celebrate you, David!   The many lives you touched will live on through us!   RIP David

David and I were first year choir teachers together in Edinburgh.  We had alot of laughs together. David loved teaching his students and I know that he touched many lives.  David will truly be missed.

David was one of my closest friends and I am grateful beyond measure for the opportunity to have laughed, cried, argued, and laugh again with him. David always spoke so highly of his family and I had the pleasure of getting to know a few of you along the way. He was always asking about my family and he got to know a couple of them as well. I thank God every day for the chance to have spent time in this life with him. I will always cherish my memories of David and our friendship.

Hunting for beautiful things:

I was a very scared teenager—afraid that I would do everything wrong and end up with a life that didn't feel like it was mine. This pretty much plagued everything I did, including the Texas All-State Choir auditions. I would wake up with a stomach ache every morning of a competition and spend an entire day mortified and nauseated. 

To a 15 year-old, this contest was the most important moment of life. Everything was riding on an, at most, 5-minute audition. It didn't matter what people told me, "You'll never think about this in the great scheme of your life. The auditions don't matter. No one cares if you're an All-Stater or not." The auditions were important, but not for the reasons they implied and not the reasons a 15-year-old might believe.

My friend, Uncle David, as I lovingly called him, knew how to make musicians, sure, but more than that, he knew how to make passionate artists, out of scraggly high school students looking for a place to fit. I still remember the speech he gave a busload of Edinburgh High School kids one cold and wet night in January 1998. He told that group a great many things that evening but the most important words of advice fell under the category of "showing how much you love what you're doing." The idea of loving music was foreign to me, but the next morning, I woke up without the nausea and the fear. I woke up with an inspired outlook on what I was doing. I wasn't competing. I was sharing my gift. I was sharing music. 

Uncle David always did what he loved and he helped countless choirs and, ultimately, the individual voices in those choirs to find what they loved too. Today, I celebrate my dear friend's life—a life that I will never forget.

Mr. C, You took a tone deaf wallflower and helped me bloom into unique, strong and beautiful orchid. I don't have as much natural talent as some of the other original 10 All Staters. I don't think that they ever realized how many hours of practice I had to put in just to"hang" with them. You always told me to leave it all on the stage, put all of myself into the music and it would show...well you were right (as always). You touched so many people's hearts, you changed so many people's lives, and I Love You sooo much! I'm sure that you will keep Heaven's choir of angels in line. They're going to kick butt now! My condolences to the Custer family. He was a teacher, mentor, and friend. I was privileged to have him as my High School choir teacher and can truly say there was never a teacher like him out there. He would never settle for nothing less than the best from each one of us but we were delighted he pushed us to be stars! We love you and will be dearly missed. Thank you to his family for always taking us in when he would take us to San Antonio to compete. Sing in heaven with the Angels David :)

My condolences to all of David's family, especially Michael.  He was a wonderful musician and friend.  I will not be able to attend the services, but I hold him in my heart and thoughts.

My heart is broken at the loss of sweet David, but I know heaven is filled with the sound of music. Although I can't be there with my family, you are all in my heart, thoughts and prayers. Wishing you peace at this very sad time. Love and prayers, Helene and family

I was blessed to have met him at the Treble Region Clinic and concert this past weekend, I am certain that many have been tremendously blessed by his passion and love for music, just as I was. May his family find peace and solace. We have lost a dear friend. I will keep the memory of such a short friendship. My deepest regards for all who have known him much longer than me.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. A wonderful, most loving man with the biggest heart.... I had the pleasure to know and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

I was fortunate to be his student from 7th grade @ South Junior High School until I graduated from Edinburg North High School.  He was the greatest teacher, leader and mentor anyone could ask for as he went above and beyond what was asked of him to do while an educator.  I will never forget the lasting memories from 7th grade through the time I was able to share in pure joy and happiness of our beloved San Antonio Spurs winning the title in 2014!!!  Thank you Mr. David B. Custer for everything you taught me!!

Please accept my sincerest condolences. Heaven has gained an angel, and he will be another guardian watching over his friends and family.

Mr. Custer was the greatest choir director that I ever had his music and drive carried me through the years and always made me laugh...Awww sir I would tell him as he would yell at me and the tenors to vocalize lol.  You will forever be missed, remembered and love by all ..choir class 95-99. RIP

When I see people like Tony Padilla, Eddie Cardenas, Kris Benavides signing the book for David....you know he was a part of our lives, and providing laughter and good musicianship. I sat in front of David for his WHOLE junior high/high school musical career, and I must say that it was a pleasant earful at that. The guy could carry a melody....when I first heard him sing, I remember how awestruck I was. And I told him that....I was so glad to see him hook up with the East Texas band crowd(Coultas, Felton, Narvaez, etc..) and knew he'd be among friends in college. For his students, your words are an honor to him and I have NO DOUBT of his impact on you musically and as a person. Just wish I could have seen it.....STEVE

So heart broken to hear of Mr. Custer's passing! He was such a ray of sunshine as my choir teacher back at South Middle School in Edinburg. I saw him last 2-3 yrs. ago in San Antonio and I was thrilled to run into him. My condolences to his family. He was loved so much!

Every time I saw David, I got ready for a big hug....and I got ready to laugh.  He had the best stories, and could talk about mundane, daily events in such delightful ways...everyone was laughing, smiling, and totally enjoying themselves by the time David completed  the "story-telling."  He was such a gift in my life!  Loved him much...always the gentleman...always regarding others as more important than himself.  He was totally selfless, and he always found the best in all of us.  Rest well, my dear friend....you were the best.

Our thoughts and prayers are with David's family and friends. Joe and I met David 20 years ago as choir directors. Through the years, David has always been joyful and happy to see a friend. I never walked by him without a hug. His light will be missed. He has touched so many lives. What a blessing.

You also converted me from a Rockets fan to a Spurs fan and I have enjoyed celebrating with you via Facebook about the Spurs winsever since! Thank you for your sense of humor and your sweet spirit. My deepest condolences to the Custer Family.  David and I attended John Jay High School together! He was a wonderful friend and we shared many fun times ( sophomore year/chemistry class). So glad I was able to reconnect with him on Facebook! Thank you David for all the fun high school memories! You will be forever missed!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Custer family during this difficult time.  David was a very special friend to us.  We went to John Jay High School together and Eddie was in the band with him.  David always provided transportation after the football games.  We had a great with him toilet papering houses and shaving cream fights.  Memories that will last forever.  David gave us the gift of his beautiful voice for our wedding, 25 years ago.  We will miss our dear friend.  Rest in Peace, David.
