Dawn was born in Duluth MN, May 17, 1957. After a few years abroad, she and her family made their way to Universal City, TX/RAFB. She graduated from Samuel Clemens High School in 1975 and earned a magna cum laude degree in political science from the University of Texas San Antonio.
Moving to Hawaii she landed a job with the American Heart Association (AHA) on the island of Kauai. While Dawn loved Hawaii, and returned as often as she could, a job opportunity with the National Center of AHA had her returning to Texas, specifically Dallas. This turned out to be serendipitous as she met the love of her life Mark Dufresne at work. As Dawn was not fond of the Texas heat and humidity, she and Mark moved to Raleigh, NC. They lived there happily until Mark passed in 2017. In 2018 Dawn returned to San Antonio to help care for her mom.
Dawn loved to travel visiting almost every state. She often took her nephews on trips across the country during their summer breaks and traveled with her mother and siblings to family reunions in Minnesota. She also went to England twice and always hoped to return. And of course, she and Mark traveled all over the USA.
A prodigious reader, Dawn was one of the original Elizabeth Peters book thieves. Her purloined copy of the Camelot Caper, the only book she ever 'forgot' to return to the San Antonio library remained a prized possession. Transitioning to electronic books, she leaves behind an impressive kindle library.
Though not a native North Carolinian Dawn took UNC basketball into her heart and lived for the team's successes. She and her mom also shared a love for the San Antonio Spurs.
Dawn had many pets over the years most having exotic names of Hawaiian origin. Her last, more prosaically named cat, Lincoln, predeceased her by just a few hours.
It's hard trying to sum up her life in a few words...Dawn had a big heart. She loved her family and friends. Dawn's father Don predeceased her, and she is survived by her mother Hazel, brother Brian, sister Pam, nephews Nigel and Alex and friends too numerous to list.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 2:00pm, at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, 14700 San Pedro Ave. San Antonio, Texas 78232.
