Delarene Moore Graham, affectionately known as "Denny" to her friends and family, passed away on January 30, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and creativity. Born on November 25, 1928, in her great grandmother's home in San Antonio, Texas, Denny's journey was marked by profound dedication to education, community, and the arts.
Growing up in Austin, Texas, Denny pursued her passion for learning, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from Southwest Texas University, followed by a postgraduate degree at UT Austin. Her thirst for knowledge was matched only by her love for literature, poetry, and the arts, which she passionately explored throughout her life.
Denny's professional journey led her to become a devoted speech pathologist, specializing in working with exceptional children in special education. She learned American Sign Language to communicate with those exceptional children, and this served her later in life as she reverted back to finger spelling when words (her voice) failed her. This meant that her wonderful caregivers learned the ASL alphabet to sign back to her.
Denny also served as a teacher, imparting her wisdom in subjects ranging from English and drama to Sunday school lessons. Her impact extended beyond the classroom as she played a pivotal role in establishing the library at Coker Methodist Church, a testament to her faith and commitment to community enrichment.
A talented writer and Associate Editor of the Sparks, Hollywood Park paper for 18 years, Denny's literary contributions touched the hearts of many, reflecting her humor, eloquence and insight. Her love for the written word was surpassed only by her love for her family and community.
Denny shared 47 beautiful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Edward A. Graham, Sr., a man of profound faith and kindness, until his passing in 2000. Together, they raised two children, Laura Maxwell and Edward A. Graham, Jr., instilling in them values of compassion, integrity, and service.
Beyond her professional and familial commitments, Denny embraced life's adventures with zest and enthusiasm. Her love for travel took her to destinations across Europe, Bermuda, Hawaii, and Canada, and gave her portrayals of Women of the Bible in Mexico and Guyana, where she soaked in the beauty and diversity of the world around her.
Denny's legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and boundless creativity touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on her community and beyond.
Denny is preceded in death by her parents, Irene and Edwin Moore; and her beloved husband, Edward A. Graham, Sr. She is survived by her children, Laura G. Maxwell (David) and Edward A. Graham, Jr. (Casey); her granddaughters, Kaylin and Gwen Maxwell; and numerous other extended family members and friends.
Denny will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
