On October 25, 2022, Derek Griffin lost his hard fought battle with cancer at the age of 38. Derek was never one to back down from a challenge. Whether it be tackling Special Forces Q Course after only a year in the Army, or standing by his 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) brothers in active combat zones, or fighting a 3-6 month terminal cancer diagnosis for over 3 years. All while finding the best jokes and memes to put a smile on someone’s face. He was up for each and every challenge life gave him, and relished in accomplishing them. His deep love for his family and friends, and ability to uplift people with his humor will be deeply missed.
Derek is survived by his mother Debbie Griffin, his sister Shea Haynes and her partner Cole, his nephew Alexander and niece Lillian, his brother James Hubbard, his military brothers, and countless family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Derek’s name to the Green Beret Foundation (https://greenberetfoundation.org/), who were incredibly generous in providing support, guidance, and comfort to Derek and his family in his final months.
All services will be held at Sunset Funeral home on Austin Hwy in San Antonio TX. Wake will be held on Nov 9th from 4:30-8pm, and services will be held Nov 10th at 12pm followed by military funeral honors at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery.
