Diana Gutierrez Fernandez went to be with Our Lord on November 8, 2024. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on March 25, 1950. She was a graduate of Incarnate Word Academy High School, Del Mar College and Texas A&I University where she received a B.A. degree and Master of Arts degree in 1974. She worked as a city planner for the city of Corpus Christi and then transitioned to a career in Education, spending many years as a private and public school educator and administrator, in Corpus Christi, Dallas and Portland, Oregon.
She had the good fortune to be a part of the Abbey Singers, who sang mostly in Catholic Churches in Corpus Christi and surrounding communities in South Texas during the late 1960’s and 1970’s. She was a very talented guitar player and singer. As a testament to the quality of the music and performance, the group was able to produce an English and Spanish album (Yahweh Called Me, Silencio). She was an excellent photographer, videographer, cook and writer. She loved to travel, having visited the Great Wall of China, Germany, Ireland, Mexico City, Guatemala, Peru, Guanajuato and many places throughout the United States.
She was very athletic, and loved to skate, swim, play tennis and golf. She loved to go on trips and especially enjoyed going to the beach in Corpus Christi where she and the family sometimes spent nights on the beach as well as camped at various destinations. She loved her family dearly and always had wonderful family traditions and celebrations every holiday, with wonderful food and festivities. She loved to laugh and was often the jokester and lighthearted one in the family.
Diana had many friends and loved ones who cared deeply for her. She had many wonderful experiences and lived a full life. She played guitar at the San Fernando Cathedral and St. Pius X Church in San Antonio and loved singing choral music. She studied art in Mexico and often displayed her photography at a King William Art Gallery, which showcased local talented artists. She created the “Guti” cookbook of family recipes and she created the first digital cookbook that was available on the Apple Bookstore online. Diana started weaving and learning how to loom. She loved politics, believed in progressive causes and was proud of her family and heritage.
She had many loving animals over her lifetime and most recently cared for Elsie, a sweet Schnoodle that she found at the Animal Defense League.
Diana lived a beautiful and wonderful life. She fought courageously until the very end. We are grateful for the special bonds she formed with friends from her support groups, her many caregivers and in particular Mary and Sophia, who served her and loved her through her last days. We are grateful to the Trinity Home Hospice group, her loving care teams and Dr. Estrada, Dr. Sahay and their staff.
