He was born July 26, 1931 to Marian and Charles Ryckman in St. Louis, Missouri. He enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War, with the 82nd Airborne. Don married Margaret Obermeier in 1956, and their devotion to each other carried them through the joys and struggles of their life together.
He graduated from St. Louis University and began a professional career in development there, which continued at Regis University in Denver, Denver Art Museum, Monticello College in Illinois, as Vice President of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, and as an independent consultant working with the Boy Scouts, Catholic churches, hospitals, theaters, museums, and many non-profit organizations. He served numerous worthy causes, including Right to Life and The Rotary Club, worked at Universal Bookbindery, and established businesses in fundraising, oil and gas, commercial real estate, and dog training.
He was a founding and faithful member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. In creating Ryckman Kennels in Boerne with his wife, and his son Buck, he utilized vast expertise in hunting and training sporting dogs. Don was happiest outdoors, and was a relentless sportsman who loved to hunt and fish. Don was stubborn, fearless, energetic and gregarious, with a ready sense of humor and a "can do" attitude. He was enthusiastic about the life he lived.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Jean Pretz.
He delighted in the company of his family and is survived by Margaret, his wife of 54 years; by his daughters, Michele Ryckman, Cynthia White, and Mary Uhl; son, Donald "Buck" Ryckman Jr.; sons in law, Michael White and Robert Uhl; grandchildren, Madeline, Andrew and Elisabeth White, Kathryn, Elizabeth and Emma Ryckman, and Matthew, Charles and Joseph Uhl; aunt, Evelyn King; brother, Jack Ryckman and sister in law, Joan; cousins, nieces and nephews; and extended Obermeier family.
