Donald Spring, Jr., San Antonio's last traveling typewriter repairman, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship and dedication to an art form nearly forgotten in today’s digital age. Known for his skill and passion, Donald spent decades traveling to customers’ homes and offices, ensuring typewriters—once the backbone of communication—were in perfect working order. In a 2017 interview with Texas Public Radio, he shared his deep affection for the machines, calling them "beautiful pieces of history." His love for typewriters began early in life, and his repair business symbolized a devotion to maintaining tradition amidst rapid technological change.
Donald was not only known for his technical prowess but also for his kindness and generosity to his clients. With every repair, he offered a piece of nostalgia, reminding many of the tactile joys of typing on a manual machine. His work has now become part of the fabric of San Antonio’s history, a story of someone who preserved the past with pride.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Spring, Sr. and Virginia Dial. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lola Spring; daughter, Lisa Starr and husband Scott; grandchildren, Kiley, Kaydence, and Colt; sister, Sherry Cummings and husband Michael; as well as numerous extended family members and a lifetime of friends.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, October 3, 2024 beginning at 12:00 PM at Porter Loring Mortuary.
