The San Antonio native was born Doris Lee to Maurice and Ethel Mazur Polunsky on July 22, 1935, and graduated from Woodlawn Elementary, Horace Mann Junior High, Thomas Jefferson High School and Trinity University.
She was well known for her work as a Social Security Consultant. She started working with the Social Security Administration in 1957, oftentimes traveling to surrounding towns to meet senior citizens and disabled persons, answering their questions and offering advice and solutions to their individual problems.
Her contemporaries called her "the best," and her administrative bosses didn't replace her when she retired. They said "she couldn't be replaced" after 25 years of service in the field. After that, she was a private consultant, was heard on local radio stations and wrote a regular newspaper column.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack Fry, and is survived by a daughter, Cindy and son-in-law, Darren Stalder in Seattle; a daughter, Paula and son-in-law, Bill Tatsch in Austin; and a daughter, Dede and son-in-law, Frank Mease, in Houston and three grandchildren and numerous nieces and a nephew. Other survivors include a brother, Bob Polunsky and sister-in-law, Paulina in San Antonio; a sister, Diane and brother-in-law, Lester Dulitz in New Orleans; a cousin, Carolyn Devin in San Antonio; and her devoted caregiver, Aurora Purser, also of San Antonio.
