Doris Joan Jackson was born in Weslaco, Texas, on May 26, 1937, and passed away in San Antonio, Texas, on September 18, 2021, at the age of 84. Our loving mother / grandmother / sister / aunt will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Doris was the oldest daughter of 9 children born to Irene and Robert Gorhum. At the age of 14, while her father was ill and her mother was taking care of him almost full-time, she took on the role of mother to her younger siblings. She attended Weslaco high school, graduating in 1955, after which she married Eddie Cowling and had 3 daughters – Debra Wainscott, Nancy Phillips and Melinda Friesenhahn. In the next phase of her life, in October 1986, she married Jerry Jackson, and they were married for 35 years. She retired in 2004 after 25 years of working in civil service at both Kelly and Randolph Air Force Bases. After retirement, she and Jerry enjoyed regular trips to Texas beaches for fishing, relaxing and walks on the beach. Some of the family’s fondest memories are of gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at Jerry and Doris’s home, spending countless hours catching up with family members and eating Jerry’s fried turkey and Doris’s cornbread dressing and gravy.
She was survived by her husband Jerry, 3 brothers – Robert Frank (Darlene), Dan (Patricia) and Beauford (Cheryl) – and 3 sisters – Jessie Lee Klinge, Jimmie Faye Savage and Dorthy Reeves (Ira) – and a sister-in-law (Golda), her 3 daughters and their spouses (Debra and Gene Wainscott, Nancy and Noel Phillips, Melinda and Jeff Friesenhahn), 2 stepsons (Scott and Kenneth Jackson) and 2 stepdaughters (Cindy Patti (Kevin) and Carrie Jackson), 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers – Billy and Earl Gorhum, and her grandson, Cory Wainscott.
The family invites visitors beginning at 12:00 noon at Porter Loring North (Gold Canyon at 1604); and then join the procession for departure for the cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
