Doris Hudspeth Miller passed away peacefully at home in San Antonio, Texas, following a long illness. She was born to Willa Mae Hughes and Thomas Dee Hudspeth in Wellington, Texas. Her parents were both educators: Thomas was a high school principal and Mae was a first-grade teacher. Doris followed in their footsteps and taught school for four years.
Doris graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1949. She earned a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Trinity University and a Master of Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Doris was proud of her work for various educational, social, and arts-focused philanthropies in San Antonio. She served others willingly and joyfully in many organizations including Planned Parenthood, the Volunteer Council of the San Antonio State Hospital, the Southwest Forum, and the Interfaith Welcome Coalition. She was an active member of the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio Museum Association, San Antonio Symphony League, and the Mental Health Association.
Midlife, when Doris earned her Master’s degree, her bio stated, “I am always ready to be of service and help someone.” Her career in social work included serving as assistant administrator of a home health agency, executive director for the Guadalupe Home, and counselor in private practice. She served on the Institutional Review Board at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio and taught as an adjunct professor at OLLU.
Doris explored her creative side through fiber art and writing. She worshipped for many years at First Presbyterian Church and joined Alamo Heights United Methodist Church with her late husband Brent. They were active members of the Seekers Sunday School class. Doris was also an active participant in the Castle Hills Woman’s Club and the San Antonio CG Jung Center.
We remember Doris for being charming, intelligent, resourceful, and articulate with a keen eye for design. She was in her element talking on the phone or visiting with friends. Doris always enjoyed hearing and telling a good story. She was sincerely interested in learning about the lives of her friends, family, and clients. Doris and Brent loved reading, spending time with their grandchildren, and doting on their dogs.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband the Reverend Roy Brent Fisher, and her brother Tom Hudspeth. She is survived by her daughters Katherine Watkins of Mesquite, Anne Hohenberger of San Antonio, Robin (Robert) Clark of Port Aransas; brother Don (Gwen) Hudspeth of Castroville; and her first husband Robert Hohenberger.
Extended family includes Jennifer Brueggerhoff, Sean Watkins, Hailey Clark, Robert Clark, Mary Ann Miller (Brian) Mortensen, Debbie Fisher (Cynthia Tapia), Lynn Fisher (Bruce) Partain, Laurie Fisher (John) Woodward, Roy (Carol) Fisher, and their families.
With your good thoughts and prayers, we send Doris off to a better place with her parents, her brother, and her beloved Brent.
