

Born July 27, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois to Thomas Anthony Doherty and Edith Goe Doherty, Jean was a graduate of Northwestern University, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and a Drama Major. Jean dedicated the majority of her life to her family and charitable work. For many years, her passion was running the Gift Shop at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. She served as head scorekeeper, concession manager and Team Mom as she encouraged both her sons to develop athletically.
In later life, Jean became a sister in P.E.O., a philanthropic organization supporting the advancement, motivation and education of women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship. She also served as a Stephen Minister and was a Deacon of Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples, FL. Affectionately known as "Bear" or "Grandma Bear" to her family, Jean was preceded in death by her husband of over sixty years, Ralph Lyon Countryman, Jr.
Jean is survived by: her sons, Dr. David Mark Countryman (wife Vickie) and Thomas A. Countryman (wife Jean); grandchildren, Andrew Countryman (wife Suzanna), Scott Countryman, Matthew Countryman (wife Emily), John Countryman (wife Brittany); Rachel Countryman, Rebekah Countryman, and Stephen Countryman (wife Kelsey); and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Ellis Countryman.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 7, 2016, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
