Dortha Irene "Dot" Watkins, a cherished soul known for her kindness, generosity, and selfless nature, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, in San Antonio, TX, due to a stroke. Born on April 22, 1931, in Oklahoma City, OK, Dot's life was a tapestry of love, creativity, and enduring friendships.
Dot's journey began as the heart of her family, a role she embraced with every fiber of her being. Her late husband, James Watkins, was her partner in life's dance, and together they nurtured a family of strong and loving women. Her daughter, Donna; granddaughter, Erica; and great-granddaughter, Rowan were the pride of Dot's life, and she poured her love into them with every chance she got. She and Erica had a special bond that was a joy to behold.
A woman of many talents, Dot was an excellent seamstress, fashioning clothes for Donna and her dolls during her childhood, each stitch a testament to her love and attention to detail. In her middle years, Dot discovered a passion for painting, a talent that graced the walls of her own home and those of her family members. Her artwork was not just a hobby, but a piece of her soul that she shared generously.
Dot's love for the written word was insatiable; she was an avid reader who found solace and adventure within the pages of countless books. Her sharp mind was further exercised through her love of puzzles, a pastime that brought her much joy and satisfaction. For over six decades, Dot played bridge, a game that not only challenged her intellectually but also fostered a community of friends who shared in her enthusiasm.
Her friendships were a testament to her character, as she maintained connections from her childhood throughout her entire life. The Church of Latter Day Saints held a special place in Dot's heart, providing her with a spiritual home and a community of friends who became like family. The bonds she formed within the church were among the most important in her life, and they supported her as much as she supported them.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Dot Watkins lived by this creed, touching lives and lifting spirits wherever she went. Her legacy is one of love, warmth, and the quiet strength that comes from a life well-lived.
Dot's kindness was as natural to her as breathing, and her generosity knew no bounds. She was a selfless spirit who gave without expecting anything in return, and her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
As we say goodbye to Dortha Irene Watkins, we celebrate the life of a woman who was a beacon of light and love. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, the beauty of her paintings, and the countless lives she touched with her grace and compassion. Dot's life was a beautiful journey of love and friendship, and though she will be dearly missed, her spirit will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know her.
