Doug I just cannot believe you died.  Condolences to your brother and nieces and other friends.  I'll be doggoned.  I cannot believe it.  The world lost a real light of love and humor.  The world was a better place with you in it alive my good man.  Man.  Just can't believe it.

 I am not part of the family by blood but have always been made to feel like part of the family. 

I remember meeting Doug for the first time when I was about 16, that was a LONG time ago. Doug was always one to make me feel included. He asked questions about my family, my hobbies and goals. He truly was interested and cared. He had a way about making everyone he met feel special, that’s a true gift. My husband and both my children have only met him once or twice and they have great respect for him as well. 

Doug is unforgettable, one of a kind, with a brilliant mind with an amazing soul.

I know he will be missed tremendously. My heart goes out to all his friends and family. 

I first met Doug while we were in high school. We became immediate friends, but I never could’ve imagined we’d still be talking for over 50 years. I loved his fascinating stories and his keen insights. He was there in the times you need a good friend to encourage and care about you. As the beautiful family tribute photos and video reveal, Doug was charming and endearing in every way. He cared so deeply about his family and his friends. I will forever treasure my memories of him. To Doug’s family and friends attending his memorial service today in San Antonio, I hope you find peace and comfort, remembering Doug. Sending much love from New York.

It was a great fondness to have known Doug. 

The 1st time I met Doug was in May of 2012. The clients and us arrived at about 4 pm at a law office in San Francisco. The meeting was supposed to last less than 30 minutes to sign the 2 inch thick credit agreements. But Doug found errors in the documents and advised us that a few pages needed to be replaced. He then walked to another office and left us in a conference room. He went on to make at least 5 more revisions as he discovered more discrepancies and kept coming back apologizing for the delay. His clunky slow speed laptop which had difficulty connecting to the printer did not help. He reminded me of Detective Colombo who is persistent, shrewd, old style and coming back with “Just One More Thing”. 

We celebrated when all the bottom pages were signed, and no one seemed upset. It was his mild manner with low muffling tone and never panic under stress attitude that appeared to have soothed everyone’s nerves. 

By the time we left the law office, the clock showed 1 AM.

Doug was very protective, methodical and unafraid to stand up for what he believed in.

His laptop was slow, and his emails got bounced often because of limited memory for file attachments. For years he complained about how slow his iphone was which seemed to be generations behind. One day, he called proclaiming that he finally bought the most advanced Iphone in the market but had problems learning the new tech which now had more apps and buttons.

Doug and I continued to work together until the last moment of his life. 

The 2012 signing was the 1st and the last time we met. We kept promising each other that we will meet up when he came up North, or when I travelled down South. He then moved to San Antonio.

His passing was shocking to all of us. But he will always be in my mind. 

My deepest condolences to Doug’s family who is left behind. 

And may Doug rest in peace.

Doug came to see me in Mexico not too long ago and talked of retiring here as my neighbor.   I had not seen him in a number of years and had forgotten that Doug was:
. Incredibly smart
. Opinionated
. Tender hearted
. Complex 
. So keen on sports
. Well read
He also had a keen memory and I was shocked by all of the details he recalled about me and our past conversations from 20 to 30 years ago.  Doug loved family trees and probably knew yours too.  

I am sad that he will not be my neighbor, grow old near me and help me with projects at our local library as we had planned.  So as a memorial I will honor him today with a donation to our little library.  I will not be able to join you in person to celebrate Doug but much love is sent from Mexico to all of you that loved and cared for him, as did I.  



When I think of Doug I will remember spending fall Saturdays watching college football in his condo in Hollywood.  In the condo, Doug was able to display some of the original works of art he had collected—and they were breathtaking .

On Saturdays, he would have at 
 least two televisions playing different games. I would stay there for hours. And there were always people coming and going throughout the day. Not quite a party, more like a late night talk show. And Doug was the always the affable host.
